Katsura Golf Club is one of Hokkaido’s premier championship golf courses, located on the outskirts of Tomakomai around 30 minutes from New Chitose Airport. Designed by legendary American architect Desmond Muirhead (not Robert Trent Jones Jr.), the course opened in 1993 and is widely regarded as one of Japan’s finest modern parkland layouts.
The course takes its name from the native katsura tree, which grows throughout the property, including a remarkable 230 year old specimen beside the ninth fairway that is believed to be the largest of its kind in Japan. Muirhead’s design places great emphasis on preserving the natural landscape, with remarkably little earth moved during construction. Fairways were carefully routed through the existing forest, creating a layout where each hole feels secluded and no two holes run alongside one another. Surrounded by mature woodland, the course blends strategic golf with a tranquil natural setting. Its immaculate conditioning, thoughtful architecture and peaceful atmosphere have made Katsura Golf Club a favourite among both Japanese golfers and international visitors. The club has also hosted several LPGA of Japan Tour events, including the Nitori Ladies, reinforcing its reputation as one of Hokkaido’s leading championship venues. Located close to New Chitose Airport, Katsura Golf Club pairs naturally with Hokkaido Classic Golf Club, Hokkaido Brooks Country Club and The North Country Golf Club, creating one of Japan’s strongest championship golf itineraries. Golfers extending their stay in Hokkaido often continue to Niseko to play Hanazono Golf and Niseko Village Golf Course.
Katsura Golf Club is routed across gently undulating woodland where Robert Trent Jones Jr. made exceptional use of the property’s mature forest rather than reshaping the landscape. Each fairway has been carefully carved through native katsura, birch and pine trees, creating a sequence of secluded holes where no two fairways run parallel. The result is a peaceful and immersive golfing experience, with every hole possessing its own distinct identity.
Accuracy from the tee is rewarded throughout the round. Tree lined fairways demand thoughtful positioning, while strategically placed bunkers, water hazards and natural drainage channels influence decision making from the opening hole to the finish. Rather than relying on excessive length, the course continually challenges golfers to consider angles into the greens and carefully manage risk throughout the round.
Several holes feature lakes, streams and ravines that create both forced carries and visually striking approach shots. These hazards are integrated naturally into the landscape, requiring precise distance control and disciplined course management rather than simply rewarding power off the tee. Large, subtly contoured greens place further emphasis on quality iron play and confident putting. Although the terrain is relatively flat, Katsura never feels repetitive. The changing forest corridors, varied hole directions and thoughtful routing ensure every hole presents a fresh challenge, while the exceptional conditioning consistently ranks among the best in Hokkaido.
Katsura Golf Club features a spacious clubhouse with elegant member facilities, comfortable locker rooms, changing areas and a restaurant serving Japanese and Western cuisine in a relaxed setting overlooking the course. Practice facilities include a driving range, putting green and short game areas, allowing golfers to prepare thoroughly before their round.
