Golden Valley Golf Club is one of Japan’s most celebrated championship golf courses, located in the rolling hills of Nishiwaki, Hyogo Prefecture, approximately 90 minutes from Kobe and two hours from Osaka. Designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., together with Gary Linn and Donald Knott of Robert Trent Jones II, the course opened in 1987 and has earned a reputation as one of the country’s finest modern golf course designs.
Playing to 7,233 yards, par 72, Golden Valley was intentionally measured to match the championship length of Augusta National at the time of its construction. The course also helped shape modern Japanese golf architecture by becoming one of the first in the country to feature a single championship green on every hole, replacing the traditional dual summer and winter green system. These expansive greens, averaging around 7,500 square feet, remain one of the defining characteristics of the layout.
Widely regarded as one of Japan’s premier golf courses, Golden Valley has hosted events on the Japan Golf Tour and is consistently recognised for its strategic design, exceptional conditioning and natural beauty. Set amongst forested valleys and waterways in the Hyogo countryside, the course rewards thoughtful shot making and precise course management rather than simply power from the tee.
Golden Valley Golf Club is regularly paired with Rokko Kokusai Golf Club and both championship layouts at Arima Royal Golf Club’s Noble and Royal Courses making it a highlight of golf tours through the Kansai region. Golfers interested in Robert Trent Jones Jr.’s work may also enjoy Katsura Golf Club in Hokkaido.
Golden Valley Golf Club is routed through gently rolling valleys where Robert Trent Jones Jr. made full use of the property’s natural terrain. Two returning nine hole loops follow the contours of the landscape, with mature forests, streams and lakes creating a course that is both visually striking and strategically demanding.
True to Jones’ design philosophy, generous landing areas gradually narrow towards ideal approach positions, encouraging golfers to think carefully about placement from the tee. Well positioned bunkers, flowing creeks and natural water hazards influence decision making throughout the round, rewarding precision over aggression.
The course opens and closes with memorable par fives, while the demanding par four second immediately establishes the strategic nature of the layout. A creek runs the full length of the left side of the hole, placing pressure on the opening drive and rewarding players who commit confidently to their chosen line. Water continues to shape play across much of the course, not as decorative features but as integral elements of the architecture.
The large championship greens are among Golden Valley’s defining characteristics. Their subtle contouring, multiple pin positions and extensive bunker protection demand accurate approach play and confident putting, ensuring the course provides a stern but fair test for golfers of every standard.
Golden Valley Golf Club offers an elegant clubhouse with spacious locker rooms, comfortable lounges and a restaurant serving Japanese and Western cuisine overlooking the surrounding countryside. A professional shop stocks golf apparel, accessories and essential equipment for members and visiting golfers.
Practice facilities include a driving range and putting green, allowing golfers to prepare before their round on one of Japan’s most respected championship layouts.
Motorised golf carts are available and are the standard mode of play given the course’s rolling terrain. Depending on the playing package, caddie service may also be available and should be arranged in advance when booking.
Golden Valley Golf Club is part of the Shinwa Golf Group, which also operates nearby Pine Lake Golf Club and several other highly regarded courses throughout western Japan. Many golfers combine Golden Valley with Pine Lake as part of a wider Kansai golf itinerary.
Although there is no on site accommodation, the club is easily reached from Kobe, Osaka and Kyoto, making it an excellent day trip or a highlight of a multi day golf tour through the Kansai region.
