The Hills Course is one of two 18-hole layouts at Navarino Hills, part of the Costa Navarino resort in Messinia, on the south-west coast of Greece’s Peloponnese peninsula. Designed by two-time Masters champion and Ryder Cup player José María Olazábal, together with his Olazábal Design team, the course opened in February 2022 alongside its sister layout, the International Olympic Academy Golf Course. It plays 18 holes to a par of 72, measuring approximately 6,251 to 6,280 metres from the back tees depending on source.
Set across rolling hillside terrain above the coast, The Hills Course is best described as an inland mountain/parkland design, distinct from the more coastal character of Costa Navarino’s Dunes and Bay courses. It completes a 72-hole golf offering at the resort, spread across four courses within a 13-kilometre radius, and has helped establish Navarino Hills as one of Europe’s more significant modern golf developments. The course has hosted rounds connected to the Messinia Pro-Am series since opening. Other courses at the Resort include the Olympic Academy, Bay and Dunes courses.
Signature characteristics include a mix of blind and semi-blind tee shots, a demanding par-6 sixth hole and a short, scenic par-3 fifth measuring around 132 metres. The course is generally reserved for resort hotel guests and members, and advance booking is essential. A valid handicap certificate is required, with a limit of 36, proper golf attire and soft spikes are mandatory, and dogs are not permitted. Buggies are included with green fees.
The Hills Course sits on the opposite side of a ridge from the International Olympic Academy Golf Course, and where that layout leans towards open sea views, The Hills Course takes on a more rural character, running through gently rolling countryside above the coastline. The routing makes use of natural elevation change throughout, with tee shots that move across valleys and hillside contours rather than following flat ground, giving the course a distinctly different feel to Costa Navarino’s coastal layouts.
Olazábal’s design incorporates a number of blind and semi-blind shots, requiring golfers to trust the line off the tee rather than rely purely on sight. The par-3 fifth, at around 132 metres, is the shortest hole on the course and one of its more picturesque, while the par-6 sixth is widely regarded as the toughest test on the front nine, demanding a well-managed three-shot approach. On the back nine, the par-4 13th offers a genuine birdie opportunity for golfers willing to play strategically off the tee.
The Hills Course is served by the Hills Clubhouse, which opened alongside the course in 2022 and is shared with the neighbouring International Olympic Academy Golf Course. The clubhouse houses Piqantro, a Spanish restaurant, along with bar facilities for golfers before and after their round.
Practice facilities at Navarino Hills include a 60-bay driving range, putting green, pitching green, chipping green and practice bunker, along with a short game area covering approximately 15,000 square metres, among the more extensive practice set-ups within the Costa Navarino portfolio. A pro shop is available on site for equipment and apparel.
Buggies are included with green fees and are standard for rounds on the course given its hillside terrain and elevation changes. Equipment hire is available through the resort’s golf operation for golfers travelling without clubs.
Accommodation is not located directly at The Hills Course, though it forms part of the broader Costa Navarino resort, with five-star hotel options including The Romanos and The Westin Resort at Navarino Dunes, and Mandarin Oriental and W Costa Navarino at Navarino Bay, all connected to the golf courses via the resort’s shuttle network.
