The Dunes Course is Greece’s first signature golf course, located at Navarino Dunes, part of the Costa Navarino resort in Messinia, on the south-west coast of the Peloponnese. Designed by two-time US Masters champion and former Ryder Cup captain Bernhard Langer, in association with European Golf Design, the 18-hole course opened in May 2010 and plays to a par of 71 over approximately 6,018 metres from the back tees.
The course is a resort-style layout with links-influenced characteristics closest to the coast, set among olive and fruit groves with the Sellas River running through parts of the site. It is widely regarded as the standout course within the four-course Costa Navarino portfolio and has been named Greece’s number one course by Golf Digest and recognised as Greece’s Best Golf Course at the World Golf Awards. It has hosted the AEGEAN Messinia Pro-Am since 2010, alongside other international amateur and corporate events including the Greek Maritime Golf Event. Other courses at the Resort include the Bay, Hills and Olympic Academy courses.
Wide fairways and large undulating greens are defended by numerous pot bunkers, making bunker play and course management central to scoring well. The course is not suited to walking due to its scale and is played by buggy. The course is managed by Troon Golf and sits adjacent to The Romanos and The Westin Resort Costa Navarino.
The Dunes Course is laid out across two loops of nine holes, both starting and finishing near the clubhouse and the resort’s two five-star hotels. The routing moves through varied terrain, from links-style holes closest to the shoreline, where the course takes its name from the dunes separating several holes from the beach, through to inland stretches shaped by olive and fruit groves and the meandering Sellas River. This range of landscape within a single round is one of the course’s defining features.
The second hole offers the course’s principal sea view, looking out towards the Bay of Navarino, while the front nine builds through a series of well-bunkered par 4s that reward accurate positioning off the tee. The par-4 sixth is generally considered the signature hole, playing steeply downhill from an elevated tee to a green defended by four bunkers. At around 280 metres, it is reachable for longer hitters, though a well-struck approach and careful reading of the green’s slope matter more than raw distance.
The Dunes Course is served by its own clubhouse, positioned beside The Romanos, a Luxury Collection Resort, and The Westin Resort Costa Navarino. The clubhouse houses a restaurant with views over the course, along with a pro shop stocking equipment and apparel. Practice facilities include a full-size driving range with two practice tees, a putting green, pitching green, chipping green and practice bunker, supporting golfers looking to warm up or work on their game before a round.
Buggies are available and generally necessary given the scale of the course, and equipment hire is available through the resort’s golf operation. Complimentary shuttle services connect the Dunes Course with Costa Navarino’s other courses, the Bay Course and Hills Course, running at regular intervals throughout the day.
Accommodation is not on site at the course itself, but The Romanos and The Westin Resort Costa Navarino are both within a short distance, offering five-star lodging, dining and spa facilities as part of the broader Navarino Dunes precinct. The Dunes Course golf operation, along with the resort’s other courses, is managed by Troon Golf.
