The Bay Course is one of two 18-hole championship courses at Costa Navarino’s Navarino Bay development, in Pylos, Messinia, on Greece’s south-west Peloponnese coast. Designed by Robert Trent Jones II and opened in October 2011, it sits roughly ten kilometres south of the resort’s original Dunes Course. The layout is a resort-style course set across olive groves, mountain canyon and coastal terrain, playing to a par of 71 over 5,614 metres from the back tees, with four sets of tees to suit different playing levels. Other courses at the Resort include the Olympic Academy, Hills and Dunes courses.
The course is recognised within the Costa Navarino golf portfolio as a scenic, all-round test that complements the more traditional Dunes Course, and it regularly features in rankings of Greece’s best golf courses alongside its sister layouts. Its defining characteristic is variety: the routing moves through three distinct zones known as Seaside, Canyon and Grove, with two holes played directly alongside the historic Bay of Navarino, site of the 1827 Battle of Navarino. Buggies are provided with green fees here due to the elevation.
The Bay Course opens with a downhill par 4 that plays towards the water, setting the tone for a front nine that spends much of its time close to the coast. The par-3 second follows the shoreline, one of four greens on the course set against the backdrop of the Bay of Navarino. From here the routing climbs steadily, trading sea views for panoramic outlooks across the surrounding hills and olive groves as the course moves into its Canyon section, where the terrain becomes noticeably more dramatic and the holes are cut through natural ravines and rock outcrops.
The final third of the round, the Grove section, threads through mature olive groves, some trees reportedly centuries old, giving these holes a more sheltered, parkland feel in contrast to the exposed coastal and canyon stretches earlier in the round. This shift in landscape three times over 18 holes is the course’s principal strategic and visual feature, and it means club selection and shot shape demands change considerably as the round progresses.
The closing stretch is the most talked-about part of the layout. The 17th is a narrow, tightly bunkered par 4 running between the shoreline and thick brush, offering little room for error and widely regarded as one of the more demanding closing holes in Greek golf. Wind off the bay is a regular factor, particularly on the seaside holes, and can materially affect club selection on the exposed tees.
Elevation change is significant throughout, and while this adds to the visual drama of the round, it also means the course is generally played by buggy rather than on foot. Conditioning is consistently well maintained, with fairways and greens kept to a standard in keeping with the resort’s five-star positioning. Overall, the Bay Course rewards accurate ball striking over raw length, with its shorter overall yardage offset by the demands of elevation, wind and the strategic variety built into the routing.
The Bay Course is served by The Bay Clubhouse, an earth-sheltered building designed to sit within the surrounding landscape rather than above it. The clubhouse houses Ted’s Lounge, a restaurant and bar offering dining from casual snacks to private events, and Brasserie de la Bay, which serves Modern French cuisine with terrace views over the course, the bay and the sea. A well-stocked pro shop is on site, along with practice facilities including a driving range, putting green, chipping green and practice bunker.
The Navarino Golf Academy provides coaching and tuition for golfers of all levels. Equipment hire is available, covering golf clubs, shoes and other gear, and buggies are included with green fees given the course’s elevation changes. The clubhouse also offers relaxation areas and event space, supporting both casual rounds and group or tournament golf.
Accommodation is not on site at the Bay Course itself, but the wider Navarino Bay development includes the W Costa Navarino and Mandarin Oriental, Costa Navarino resorts within short distance of the course, along with the Navarino Agora retail and dining precinct.
