The West Course at Yokohama Country Club is one of Japan’s most prestigious championship golf courses and has been the stage for many of the country’s biggest tournaments. It first gained international recognition when Seve Ballesteros claimed the 1978 Japan Open, one of the earliest victories of his legendary career. The course returned to the spotlight when it hosted the 2018 Japan Open and, from 2025, became home to the Baycurrent Classic, the PGA Tour’s only official event in Japan. The tournament uses a composite layout featuring sixteen holes from the West Course and two from the East Course.
Originally opened in 1960, the course underwent an extensive restoration by acclaimed architects Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, reopening in 2016. Their work modernised the layout while preserving its natural character, creating a strategic championship course that remains faithful to the property’s rolling landscape. The course is known for its towering pine trees, dramatic elevation changes and an unusual par distribution of two par fives, three par threes and thirteen par fours. A unique addition following the renovation is the par three nineteenth hole, built specifically to settle matches that remain tied after eighteen holes.

The 2016 renovation by Coore and Crenshaw transformed the course without changing its identity. Fairways were widened to create multiple strategic angles, tees were repositioned to better utilise the property’s elevation, and every green complex was rebuilt to introduce greater variety and challenge. The previous dual green system, once common in Japan, was replaced with a single championship standard green on every hole.
The opening hole immediately introduces the course’s character with a demanding uphill par four that requires both length and accuracy. Throughout the round, players encounter a series of memorable short par fours where aggressive tee shots can create birdie opportunities, while conservative play rewards careful positioning. Natural elevation changes continually alter sight lines, club selection and approach angles, ensuring that no two holes feel alike.
Although tree lined, the West Course is never overly penal. Instead, it rewards golfers who can shape shots and think strategically, offering multiple options from the tee without resorting to excessive punishment. The routing builds naturally through the landscape, producing a course that feels both challenging and enjoyable for accomplished golfers. The closing stretch is regarded as one of the strongest in Japan, demanding accuracy under pressure before the unique nineteenth hole provides an opportunity to settle closely contested matches in traditional Japanese club style.
