The Caledonian Golf Club is located in Yokoshibahikari, Chiba Prefecture, Japan, approximately 30 minutes from Narita International Airport and around 90 minutes from central Tokyo. Opened in 1990, the 18 hole, par 72 course was designed by American architect J. Michael Poellot, a former associate of Robert Trent Jones, with input from Mark Rathert. Although built inland, the course takes inspiration from traditional Scottish links architecture, incorporating rolling fairways, strategic bunkering and firm, fast playing surfaces rather than the tree lined parkland style found at many Japanese golf courses. Nearby to Caledonian Country Club is Camellia Hills which is a championship parkland course worth of including in your itinerary.
The Caledonian Golf Club is regarded as one of Japan’s premier private golf clubs, recognised for its consistently high maintenance standards and championship quality layout. The course hosted the 2000 Japan PGA Championship and the inaugural International Series Japan on the Asian Tour in 2025, demonstrating its ability to challenge the world’s leading professionals.
The Caledonian Golf Club was conceived as a modern interpretation of Scottish links golf, adapted to the gently undulating inland terrain of Chiba Prefecture. Rather than relying on dense tree lined corridors, J. Michael Poellot shaped broad fairways across natural rises and depressions, creating multiple strategic options from the tee while demanding careful positioning for approach shots. It is a course where course management consistently outweighs raw distance.
The fairways feature pronounced contours that create uneven lies and influence approach angles into the greens. Large, bright white bunkers frame both landing areas and putting surfaces, while lakes provide strategic interest on selected holes without dominating the layout. The greens are among the defining characteristics of The Caledonian Golf Club. They are expansive, heavily contoured and maintained at championship pace, placing a premium on distance control and precise green reading. Many pin positions are most effectively approached from the correct side of the fairway, rewarding thoughtful placement from the tee.
The Caledonian Golf Club provides facilities expected of one of Japan’s leading private golf clubs. The clubhouse features spacious locker rooms, traditional bathing facilities, comfortable member lounges and a restaurant serving both Japanese and Western cuisine overlooking the course. A bar and dedicated function spaces cater for member events, corporate golf days and tournament hospitality.
Practice facilities include a full length driving range, a large putting green and a comprehensive short game practice area with pitching, chipping and bunker facilities. These areas are maintained to the same exacting standard as the championship course, allowing golfers to prepare thoroughly before their round.
The professional shop stocks golf apparel, accessories and essential equipment, with premium rental clubs available by prior arrangement for travelling golfers. Guest play is generally accompanied by experienced caddies, while motorised carts are provided and typically remain on designated paths to preserve course conditions. Pull trolleys are not commonly used.
