One of the finest golfing destinations in the Middle East, The Els Club is located just minutes away from Jumeirah Golf Estates and about 20 minutes from Dubai’s city centre. The Els Club is situated within Dubai Sports City, which is a multi-venue sports complex built to purpose. Designed by South African golfing icon Ernie Els, The Course presents a desert links layout that won ‘best new international course’ by the US magazine Links. The Els Club is a golf course designed for accessibility with a great test of golf for new players or scratch golfers. The Course opened in 2008 to wide acclaim; it has since become a favourite for visiting golfers along with Dubai Hills, Jumeirah Earth and The Majilis at Emirates Golf Club. Add world-class restaurants, a fantastic golf shop and a country club, and you have an unforgettable time.
One of the reasons The Els Club golf course is so immaculate and well-positioned on previously unwanted land is that had significant pool of funds allocated to its build. As a feature of the Dubai Sports City, The Els Club forms part of a multi-billion dollar sports development area. The golf challenge is second to none; Ernie stated ‘This course is something special… I think you can make a course challenging for the best players in the world but at the same time enjoyable for the rest of the world’s golfers… we’ve done that here.” 2008. The immaculately-kept 18-hole links course offers 7,538 yards with four sets of tees, allowing players of varying abilities a fair go.
The golf course features elevation changes, fairway and green undulations, numerous bunkers and extensive use of sandy waste areas with native grasses. Aesthetically, The Els Club matches up to its reputation as a challenging golf course with stark definition between fairway cuts, white sandy bunkers contrasting with the brown sand of the surrounding desert, and lush green fairways throughout the 18 holes. The holes have been designed to constitute characteristics of Ernie Els’ favourite holes from around the world including the bunkers at Royal Melbourne, greens from Pinehurst No.2, and rolling links fairways such as one would find at Royal Dornoch. Widely reputed as visiting golfers’ favourite or top-3 golf course in Dubai, The Els Club is a must-do experience when staying in Dubai. The “Lion’s Den” was created at The Els Club as a response to ‘Amen Corner,” the “Bear Trap,” and other famous stretches of golf holes. Comprising the 9th, 10th and 11th holes, The Lion’s Den is a three-hole stretch that is as tough as any in Dubai and the Middle East. Sponsored by Johnnie Walker, members have the ability to earn personal gifts from Johnnie Walker if they are fortunate enough to break par over this stretch of golf holes.
The Clubhouse
The Els Clubhouse in Dubai Sports City is a massive building drawing architectural influence from the Iberian Peninsula with terracotta roof tiles, expansive arches and a yellow coat. Inside the massive facility, you can dine at the Big Easy Bar and Grill which is open from 17.00 and serves cuisine from the stunning Western Cape region of South Africa. The 261 Restaurant is named after Erie’s PGA Tour record-breaking 72-hole aggregate in the 2003 Mercedes Championship; it is open from 0600 to midnight, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Practice Facilities
The practice facilities at The Els Club are world-class. With a 450-yard driving range and six flagged greens to aim at, the range is fully attended to ensure you never run out of golf balls the range is floodlit, and open between 06.30 & 22.00 every day. The short game area offers two standard greens and three full-size practice bunkers. The use of the practice area is complimentary with your green fee, but there is a fee of AED 100 if you are hoping to use the practice facilities without playing a round at The Els Club.
