Llao Llao Golf Course is set within the spectacular Nahuel Huapi National Park, on the grounds of the iconic Llao Llao Hotel & Resort in San Carlos de Bariloche, Argentina. Surrounded by glacial lakes, dense forests and the snow-capped Andes, it is widely regarded as one of South America’s most scenic golf courses.
The original front nine was designed by Luther Koontz and opened in 1940, with Emilio Serra adding the back nine in 1994 to create the current 18-hole layout. Although modest in length at 5,888 yards and playing to a par of 70, the course rewards precision and course management over power.
The routing winds through rolling parkland before reaching the shores of Nahuel Huapi Lake, which comes into play on the memorable 10th and 14th holes. Throughout the round, golfers are treated to breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains, pristine lakes and native Patagonian forest, creating an unforgettable golfing experience. Llao Llao has hosted the Argentine PGA Match Play Championship on multiple occasions and remains one of Argentina’s most celebrated resort courses. Golf is played seasonally, typically from October through April, with advance bookings highly recommended. The course is shorter than its contemporaries Chapelco and El Desafio but as a resort course, it is a quirky layout which is a lot of fun.
The routing at Llao Llao combines two distinct eras of design within a single round. Koontz’s original front nine, dating to 1940, sits closer to the historic Llao Llao Hotel and moves through centennial woods and open parkland, while Serra’s back nine, added in 1994, extends the course toward the shoreline of Nahuel Huapi Lake, bringing water more directly into play. The terrain shifts throughout the round, from tree-lined fairways in the earlier holes to more open, lake-facing terrain later in the course, with mountains and, at times, snow-capped peaks visible from multiple vantage points.
The par-3 10th marks the start of the course’s more open stretch, with the resort and Nahuel Huapi Lake coming into view, and out of bounds pressing close on the right to punish a slice while a hook risks finding the lake itself. The course’s signature hole is the par-3 18th, playing over an inlet of Nahuel Huapi Lake from an elevated tee, at around 200 to 220 yards depending on tee selection, widely regarded as one of the most memorable closing holes in Argentine golf. Earlier in the round, a notably short par-3, played at around 55 yards, offers a contrasting, more delicate test of touch.
The clubhouse at Llao Llao Golf Course offers a relaxed setting for golfers, with light dining available including sandwiches, tea blends, cakes and homemade jams, suited to a break before or after a round.
A pro shop on site offers club rental, along with individual and group lessons from resident professionals, and can assist with organising tournaments. Practice facilities include a driving range and two putting greens, allowing golfers to warm up properly before heading out.
