Chapelco Golf Club sits on the outskirts of San Martín de los Andes in Argentina’s spectacular Patagonia region, around a two-hour flight from Buenos Aires. Designed by Jack Nicklaus and Jack Nicklaus II, the course opened in 2006 as the first Nicklaus Design layout in both Argentina and South America.
Measuring 7,163 yards from the championship tees, the par-72 course is a true mountain parkland layout, seamlessly woven through native forests, crystal-clear streams and natural lagoons at the foot of the Andes. Rather than relying on dramatic earthmoving, the routing embraces the natural landscape, creating a course that feels as though it has always belonged there.
Accuracy is rewarded throughout. Narrow, tree-lined fairways framed by towering conifers demand thoughtful positioning from the tee, while subtly contoured, often compact greens place a premium on precise approach play. Stunning views of the surrounding Andes accompany golfers across much of the course, making Chapelco as memorable for its scenery as its architecture.
Since 2018, Chapelco has hosted the Argentina Classic on the PGA Tour Latinoamérica and has earned widespread recognition as one of the country’s finest courses. It has been named Argentina’s Best Golf Course at the World Golf Awards for eleven consecutive years and is widely regarded as the premier golfing destination in Patagonia.
The course forms part of the Chapelco Golf & Resort development, which also includes accommodation and residential properties. Due to Patagonia’s alpine climate, Chapelco operates seasonally during the warmer months and typically closes throughout the winter ski season, so visitors should check opening dates before planning their trip. When visiting the area, another must-play golf course is El Desafio, designed by Greg Norman.
The Nicklaus routing at Chapelco was shaped with a deliberate intent to disturb the surrounding landscape as little as possible, resulting in a course that feels worked into its mountain setting rather than carved out of it. Fairways run between stands of native conifers and birch, with the terrain shifting gently across the property at an elevation defined by the foothills of Cerro Atravesada and views toward the Chapelco mountain range. Water is a consistent feature, with mountain-fed streams and several lagoons brought into play across both nines.
The front nine’s par-4 fourth is a notable early test, playing to a fairway pinched by fescue rough before a downhill approach to a distinctive three-pointed green guarded by a wide native waste area. On the back nine, the par-3 11th is regarded as one of the course’s signature holes, requiring a tee shot over a large water hazard with the Andes providing the backdrop. The par-4 12th, at 427 yards with a soft dogleg right, is another highlight, demanding a tee shot that carries a natural lake and avoids a waste area before a fast, subtly sloped green.
Chapelco Golf Club’s clubhouse sits at the centre of the property and includes a snack bar, pro shop, equipment storage and an events room used for tournament presentations and functions. Golf carts are available for hire, and the club also offers an indoor golf facility for practice regardless of weather conditions.
Practice facilities include a driving range, putting green and chipping green, allowing golfers to prepare properly before their round. The club runs golf classes, clinics and a junior golf school, reflecting an active approach to golf development in the region.
Accommodation is available on site at the Loi Suites Chapelco Hotel, part of the wider Chapelco Golf & Resort development, which includes a swimming pool and spa. The resort also provides access to the Quilquihue river and a range of outdoor activities beyond golf, including fishing, horse riding and mountain biking, making it a suitable base for a longer stay in the region.
