The Oshima Course at Kawana Hotel offers a fascinating blend of history, charm and coastal scenery on Japan’s picturesque Izu Peninsula, around 120 km south of Tokyo. Opened in 1928, it was the first golf course built in the Tokai region and remains one of the oldest courses in the country. Designed by Mitsuaki Otani – widely regarded as the father of Japanese golf course architecture. The course laid the foundations for golf course design in Japan and continues to hold an important place in the nation’s golfing heritage.
Set on the same spectacular clifftop estate as the renowned Fuji Course, Oshima follows an 18-hole layout of two returning nines through rolling terrain overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Playing to a par 70 and measuring 5,711 yards from the back tees, it offers a more traditional and walkable golfing experience, with gently undulating fairways, mature trees and sweeping ocean views throughout the round. While shorter and less demanding than its famous neighbour, the Oshima Course rewards accuracy, thoughtful course management and an appreciation of classic golf architecture, making it a delightful and historically significant complement to the iconic Fuji Course. Another good golf course worth playing is the Grand Fields Course near Shizouka.
Oshima’s routing reflects its 1928 origins, predating the Western, links-influenced design approach that Charles Hugh Alison later brought to the neighbouring Fuji Course. Mitsuaki Otani laid the course out as two nine-hole loops on clifftop land south of the hotel, built by hand on a lava plateau in an era before heavy machinery, with fairways and greens shaped through manual soil dressing and turfing.
The terrain is elevated and coastal, with Sagami Bay visible across much of the round and Izu Oshima island on the horizon. Fairways roll gently through native Japanese trees and clifftop stretches, with several holes featuring blind tee shots and elevated greens, both hallmarks of early twentieth-century Japanese course design. Unusually for a course of this era, a number of holes share double greens, adding a further strategic wrinkle not commonly seen on modern layouts.
Oshima Course shares its clubhouse and hotel infrastructure with the Fuji Course at Kawana Hotel, an art deco property established in 1928. Facilities include a clubhouse restaurant, a clubhouse gallery, a pro shop and an eight-stall driving range for warming up before a round. The hotel also offers a hot spring bath, a distinctive amenity for golfers looking to unwind after playing.
Unlike the Fuji Course, Oshima does not require a caddie. Instead, golf carts fitted with GPS navigation are compulsory for every round, allowing golfers to play at their own pace across the two nine-hole loops. This makes Oshima a more flexible option for visiting golfers, particularly those without a caddie booking or travelling in smaller groups.
The course is open to outside visitors as well as hotel guests, though advance booking is required. Equipment rental is available through the hotel for golfers travelling without their own clubs, consistent with the resort’s broader guest services across both courses.
As accommodation is on site at Kawana Hotel, golfers can combine a round on Oshima with a stay at the resort, taking advantage of the shared dining, hot spring and clubhouse facilities alongside the option to also play the Fuji Course if hotel guest access applies. Club storage is available through the clubhouse for guests playing multiple rounds during their stay.
