About

Fujizakura Golf Course sits on the northern foot of Mt Fuji in Fujikawaguchiko, Minamitsuru District, Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan, within the Fuji Five Lakes resort area. The 18-hole resort-style parkland course opened in October 1975 at an elevation of around 1,000 metres, with fairways divided by corridors of Japanese red pine and larch and framed by an estimated 20,000 fujizakura cherry trees. The course is best known as the long-time home of the Fujisankei Classic, one of the Japan Golf Tour’s leading men’s events, and has hosted champions including Shingo Katayama, Ryo Ishikawa and Hideki Matsuyama. Playing at 7,437 yards from the championship tees, it is regarded as one of the longest par 71 layouts in Japan, with Penn A-2 bentgrass greens maintained to tournament standard year round. When visiting the area, consider combining Daihakone and Gora Kadan in your Hakone itinerary. All courses are championship layouts and must-plays if you are in the area.

Fujizakura Country Club is a strategic, tournament-standard layout designed by Kazuya Shimura and opened in October 1975. The routing sits on the northern foot of Mt Fuji at roughly 1,000 metres elevation, with each hole separated by corridors of Japanese red pine and larch. This gives the course a defined, almost individual feel hole to hole, rather than the open sightlines typical of many resort courses. Conditions favour accuracy over raw power. The fairways are generous by championship standards, but the true test lies in the greens and their surrounds, which are widely regarded as the most demanding element of the course. Penn A-2 bentgrass greens run fast and firm, and misjudged approach shots are punished by tightly contoured run-offs rather than outright hazards. At 7,437 yards from the championship tees and playing to a par of 71, it is considered the longest par-71 course in Japan, a factor that has shaped its role as the long-term host of the Fujisankei Classic on the Japan Golf Tour.

Weather at altitude plays a genuine role. Summers are noticeably cooler than Tokyo, generally in the low twenties, which makes the course a popular warm-season option, while wind across the more exposed holes can influence club selection on approach shots. Autumn brings firmer conditions and turning foliage, adding a further test to shot-making as greens tend to run quicker in drier air.

The course is presented to tournament standard throughout the year, reflecting its role hosting professional competition. Historically, this competitive pedigree, including rounds played by Shingo Katayama, Ryo Ishikawa and Hideki Matsuyama, gives the round a sense of occasion uncommon in resort golf. Golfers should expect a course that rewards course management and precise iron play over aggressive driving, with the closing stretch in particular demanding composure after a round that offers little respite on the greens from start to finish.

Fujizakura Country Club operates as a full-service country club rather than a stripped-back day course, and the facilities reflect its tournament pedigree. The clubhouse is built in traditional Japanese style, incorporating irimoya, hogyou and kirizuma roof forms, and houses locker rooms, a pro shop and a restaurant serving Japanese and Western menus. The clubhouse restaurant also pours the club’s own Fujizakura Kogen Beer, brewed on site, a detail visiting golfers often remark on after a round.

A driving range and practice green are available for warming up before play, useful given the demanding nature of the greens once out on the course. Caddies are provided as standard, with a mandatory full-caddie policy in place for all rounds, and motorised carts are used for the majority of holes, with some sections requiring golfers to walk depending on terrain and course conditions. Golfers should book in advance to secure a caddie, particularly during peak tournament-adjacent periods in autumn.

Conference and function rooms accommodating up to 100 guests make the clubhouse suitable for group golf days and corporate outings alongside individual rounds. Equipment hire is limited, so travelling golfers should plan to bring their own clubs. There is no on-site accommodation, though hotels and ryokan are readily available nearby in the Fuji Five Lakes area for golfers building a multi-day stay around a round here.

"The Best Golfing Holiday When You’re Not a Golfer" I have just returned from the Hawaiian Voyages.olf Tour which I purchased as a surprise gift for my husband’s birthday. I was there as a non golfer and had a fabulous time, at no stage did I ever feel left out. Harry, Glen and Gayle were so professional in a very relaxed and welcoming way. We were looked after extremely well and they were most accommodating making sure that we had a truly memorable holiday.

Our trip to the Canadian Rockies ran so smoothly! Harry, Glenn and Gayle work together really well as a team of tour leaders to make it stress free and fun! It was a great balance of golf and free time. We were worried about playing 9 rounds, but each course was more spectacular than the one before so we are glad to have had the opportunty to see Canada's best! We met wonderful people and will definitey do another tour through Voyages.golf.

Queenstown Golf Week
Our Queenstown Golf Week 2024 was our 3rd trip with Voyages and we have at least two more booked. From the first email to the final goodbye Voyages are exemplary in every aspect. No detail was overlooked and they make you feel so very welcome. The accomodation at the Crowne Plaza was great - perfect central location... the golf courses at Jack's Point and Millbrook were outstanding and our day trip to Walter's Peak was amazing...superb BBQ buffet. We wouldn't hesitate in recommending Voyages if you want to experience a great golf trip.

The Open 2023
Voyages.golf was recommended to me thru the R&A for the Open Championship. I am very pleased I chose them to handle my vacation details. They offered a great package to tie in with my Open tickets, allowing me to go about with my plans while they took care of all the details from Hotel and transfers to/from Open venue. I even added on additional vacation details which they handled and everything went off without any issues. Voyages.golf kept me up to date with all details and any changes that arose. From start to end, they were on top of all details and I would highly recommend them to anyone interested.
