Whistling Straits features 36 holes of championship golf across two distinct courses — The Straits and The Irish. Pete Dye has fashioned a masterpiece from scrappy land on the shores of Lake Michigan. With only a thin stretch of coast to work with, he has placed over 1,000 bunkers without rakes (in-line with famed Irish links courses.) The golf course opened in 1998 and its relatively short life (compared to the great Irish and Scottish courses of old), has seen it burst to life with great fame. Jason Day won his first major title in 2015 winning the US PGA by three shots from Jordan Spieth with a record score of 20 under par.
The layout features a routing of a figure eight for both nines and features a well-balanced utilisation of the natural elements. Greens are often raised platforms with little undulation due to the layout of the land surrounding the greens. Approach shots to the greens must be accurate, and if the wind is up, low shots will be paramount to getting a score close to par. The layout presents a challenge that is both exciting and adventurous; in short, it is considered one of Pete Dye’s best golf courses & a must-do on every traveller’s itinerary.
