Located North of San Diego and overlooking the Pacific Ocean, Torrey Pines is an oceanside masterpiece of 36 holes consisting of the North and South courses. Named after a rare type of pine, тАШTorrey,тАЩ the golf course is owned by the city of San Diego and open for public play. Torrey Pines is host to the 2021 U.S. Open Championship. The last time the U.S Open came to Torrey Pines was in 2008 when Tiger Woods took the title. Similar to Pebble Beach in aesthetics, Torrey Pines offers a blend of panoramic views and premium golf offers year-round. The golf courses are located in La Jolla, California. It also hosts the US Farmers Insurance Open every year.
Torrey Pines South Course
Longer than the North Course, Torrey PinesтАЩ South Course is the longest golf course played in a regular PGA event. Originally designed by William F. Bell in 1957, the South Course has enjoyed a long history hosting the Farmers Insurance Open PGA Golf Tournament (along with the North). With Pacific Ocean views on many holes and conditions that mimic Pebble Beach Golf Links, the Torrey Pines South Course is highly coveted and sought-after. Its position further south brings warmer weather than Pebble Beach, though it is just as susceptible to fierce sea breezes and fog.
The South Course was renovated completely by Rees Jones in 2001 and again in 2019 to ensure it was ready for the 2021 U.S. Open Championship. Longer carries narrower greens make the South Course a considerable challenge of true championship quality, especially when the wind is up. Varied tee-boxes allow amateurs to enjoy the golf course, and getting a tee-time is straightforward.
Torrey Pines North Course
Considerably shorter than the South Course, Torrey PinesтАЩ North Course is more scenic and accessible for higher handicappers. The North Course was newly renovated by Tom Weiskopf in 2016; the result is a picture-perfect layout that often takes away visitor-favourite by travelling golfers. It is less expensive to play The North Course, although we recommend playing both courses over one or two days at Torrey Pines to get properly acquainted with all 36 holes.
Watch out for local wildlife on the Torrey Pines North Course; golfers often see coyote, bobcats, raccoons, deer and many birds. Always maintained to meticulous PGA standards, the North Course at Torrey Pines is a fantastic reminder of why golf should be played: as a fun outdoor activity that does not focus on having all the hallmarks of a PGA tournament course; it leaves that challenge to its sister course.
Torrey Pines has a fantastic course-side restaurant located in the golf clubhouse. It is open to all players and visitors alike. The golf shop at Torrey Pines is one of the largest in the country.
