St Enodoc Golf Club sits on the north shore of the Camel Estuary at Rock, near Wadebridge in Cornwall, England. Golf has been played on the site since 1888, with the club formally established in 1890. James Braid laid out the Church Course in 1907 and revised it further in 1922 and 1937, with additional input from Tom Simpson in 1930 and more recent work by Peter McEvoy. It is a links course, routed through large coastal sand dunes above Daymer Bay, with views across the estuary to Padstow and the Atlantic. Other courses worth visiting on your next Cornwall trip include Royal North Devon, Trevose and Perranporth in addition to St Enodoc.
The Church Course is regarded as one of the finest links in England and features regularly in national and world rankings, including Golf Digest’s World’s 100 Greatest Courses and the UK & Ireland Top 100. It has hosted Open Championship qualifying and various prestigious amateur events. The course takes its name from the small, historic church beside the 10th hole, where the poet Sir John Betjeman is buried.
St Enodoc’s Church Course is routed across large coastal dunes on the north shore of the Camel Estuary, a landform shaped by centuries of Atlantic gales depositing sand onto the headland. James Braid’s 1907 design, later revised in 1922 and 1937, threads the course through this landscape rather than imposing a rigid structure on it, and few consecutive holes play in the same direction. The result is a routing that keeps changing perspective, with views across the estuary to Padstow appearing and disappearing as the round progresses.
The terrain is genuinely undulating rather than gently rolling. Fairways run through bumpy, humped ground that produces uneven lies even from well-struck tee shots, and several holes play across dune ridges with significant elevation change. Greens are firm and sloped, demanding precise distance control rather than raw power. At only 6,557 yards and par 69, the course tests golfers through terrain and shot-making rather than length.
The clubhouse overlooks the 18th green and the Camel Estuary, with a bar and lounge plus two outdoor seating areas for drinks and bar snacks. Breakfast is served from 8.30am, with a full food menu available from 11.30am to 4.30pm. A Sunday carvery is also offered. Smart casual dress is expected in the clubhouse and dining areas, with recognised golf attire required on the courses.
The pro shop has been run by the same club professional since 1981 and covers all aspects of play, including club fitting. A teaching professional also operates from the shop, running lessons for golfers of all abilities as well as the club’s Junior Academy.
Practice facilities include covered driving range bays, two putting greens and a short game practice area, giving visitors a proper warm-up before heading to the 1st tee.
Changing rooms are available for members and visiting golfers. Trolleys and clubs can be hired through the pro shop. Buggies are available but restricted to golfers who can provide a medical certificate, and pre-booking is essential given limited supply. Caddies can be arranged with advance notice at the time of booking.
St Enodoc operates two courses on site, the Church Course and the shorter Holywell Course, giving visitors the option of a full championship test or a more relaxed round. The club does not offer on-site accommodation, though a range of hotels and guesthouses are available nearby in Rock and Wadebridge.
