Saunton Golf Club sits on the North Devon coast near Braunton, England, roughly a three-hour drive west of London. The club was founded in 1897 with an original 9-hole layout, extended to 12 holes by 1906 and to a full 18 by 1908. Herbert Fowler, also known for Walton Heath and The Berkshire, redesigned the course after the First World War, and it is regarded as one of his finest links designs. A second 18-hole course, the West, followed in 1935 to Fowler’s design and was later reworked by Frank Pennink, reopening in 1974. Nearby golf courses worth playing on your next trip to the South West of England include Royal North Devon, St Enodoc and Burnham & Berrow, in addition to Saunton.
Both courses run through the towering dunes of Braunton Burrows, a UNESCO biosphere reserve home to over 500 species of flora. The East Course, Saunton’s championship layout, has featured in the World’s Top 100 rankings, while the West sits within the UK & Ireland Top 100. The club has hosted the English Amateur, the Brabazon Trophy and the R&A Senior Amateur Championship, most recently in 2024, and Sergio García won the British Boys’ Championship here in 1997.
Saunton’s East Course, the club’s championship layout, is routed through a large loop across Braunton Burrows, exposing golfers to changing wind directions throughout the round rather than a straightforward out-and-back links test. The terrain is genuine duneland: firm, sandy soil supporting fast-running fairways and quick, undulating greens, though the elevation changes are moderate rather than severe, making for a comfortable walk despite the demanding golf.
The routing’s defining feature is its concentration of two-shot holes. Eleven of the first twelve holes are par 4s, several of them stretching past 400 yards, so the round opens with a sustained examination of long-iron and fairway-wood approach play. A run of seven consecutive par 4s through the middle of the course keeps the pressure on ball-striking, with width off the tee generally available but strategic angles rewarded into firm, well-defended greens. The closing stretch shifts rhythm, mixing in the course’s two par 5s and its par 3s, giving players late scoring opportunities after an unrelenting start.
The recently refurbished clubhouse offers panoramic views across the courses and out toward the estuary, with a bar and restaurant serving food throughout the day. Locker rooms and changing facilities are available for members and visitors, and smart casual dress with clean golf shoes is required indoors.
The pro shop is well stocked with equipment and apparel from major golf brands, and can arrange club hire, tuition through PGA professional coaches, and bookings for buggies, electric trolleys and pull trolleys, all of which should be reserved in advance. Caddies can also be pre-booked.
Practice facilities include two putting greens, a short game area for chipping, a covered driving range for iron play using a token system, and a separate grass practice ground for full-swing work in fair weather. A junior academy also operates from the club.
Saunton Golf Club itself does not offer on-site accommodation, but the Saunton Sands Hotel is located nearby and is a common base for golfers visiting the club, with sea views over the course and dunes.
