Itanhangá Golf Club is located in the leafy Itanhangá district, near Barra da Tijuca on Rio de Janeiro’s western outskirts. Established in 1933, it is one of Brazil’s most prestigious golf clubs and is widely regarded as one of the country’s finest championship venues.
Originally designed by renowned Canadian architect Stanley Thompson, the course later benefited from enhancements by Robert Trent Jones Sr., creating a layout that has stood the test of time. Today, Itanhangá is the only 27-hole golf facility in the state of Rio de Janeiro, featuring an 18-hole championship course alongside a separate 9-hole layout.
The championship course plays to a par of 71 and stretches 6,684 yards through a picturesque valley framed by mature trees, ponds and winding streams. Accuracy is rewarded throughout, with tree-lined fairways and strategically positioned hazards placing an emphasis on precision rather than power. Throughout the round, golfers are treated to spectacular views of the Tijuca Forest and the iconic Pedra da Gávea, providing a uniquely Rio backdrop.
Itanhangá has hosted some of the most significant tournaments in Brazilian golf, including the European Tour’s Brazil Rio de Janeiro 500 Years Open and the LPGA-sanctioned HSBC Brazil Cup. It has also featured among Golf Digest’s rankings of the world’s leading golf courses outside the United States, further cementing its international reputation.
Visitors can take advantage of excellent practice facilities, an active golf academy, and the availability of caddies, golf carts and pull trolleys. The course is typically closed on Mondays, so advance tee time bookings are recommended.
The championship 18-hole course occupies a compact valley site, and Thompson’s original routing makes efficient use of the available land by threading narrow, tree-lined fairways around a series of ponds and streams. The result is a course that rewards accuracy from the tee over sheer length, with mature trees framing most holes and demanding shot placement into small, well-bunkered greens. Terrain is generally flat to gently undulating within the valley floor, with the surrounding hills and forest providing a consistent backdrop rather than significant elevation change on the course itself.
The five par-3 holes are regarded as a particular strength of the layout, each individually shaped and testing a different iron in the bag. The closing stretch is notable for back-to-back par-5s at the 15th and 16th, holes capable of swinging a scorecard late in the round for golfers who have played conservatively to that point. Greens are typically kept firm and quick, adding a further examination of touch and distance control once the ball is on the putting surface.
Itanhangá Golf Club’s clubhouse serves as the hub for members and visiting golfers, with a restaurant and bar on site. Locker rooms are available, along with a sauna and swimming pool for use after a round. A pro shop stocks equipment and golfing essentials, and club rental is available for those travelling without their own clubs.
Practice facilities include a driving range, putting green and chipping green, allowing golfers to warm up properly before heading to the first tee. Caddies are available for the round, and both golf carts and pull trolleys can be arranged for those preferring to manage their own transport around the course.
Beyond golf, the club’s grounds also accommodate polo fields and tennis courts, reflecting Itanhangá’s origins as a broader sporting and social club rather than a golf-only facility. The club also runs an active golf academy, with a particular focus on junior coaching and development, reinforcing its long-standing role in Rio de Janeiro’s golfing community.
