Homepage / Listings / North America / USA / Wisconsin / Blackwolf Run – The River Course
Over two centuries ago, Chief Blackwolf and his Winnebago tribe resided in the Sheboygan River Valley. Today, melded into that very same river basin formed by the flows of glacial runoff, you’ll find The River and The Meadow Valleys at Blackwolf Run®. Blackwolf Run opened for play in June 1988 and was named that year’s “Best New Public Course” in the country by Golf Digest. Regarded as one of Pete Dye’s crowning achievements, Blackwolf Run has hosted a number of professional championships: the Andersen Consulting World Golf Championships in 1995, 1996 and 1997 as well as the U.S. Women’s Open in 1998 and 2012. We recommend staying at Kohler Resort and playing all four courses in the area including The Straits and Irish golf courses. The Blackwolf Run golf courses are great to tie into a larger Wisconsin golf trip with Erin Hills, Sentryworld and Grand Geneva Resort.
Pete Dye designed one of the best golf courses in America on rich land once known by the Winnebagos and Algonquins for exceptional fishing and hunting. Intimidating to the professional, fair and dramatic for the amateur, this “beauty of the beast” measures 6,670-metres / 7,404-yards from the back tees with a slope of 151. Target landing areas, strategic bunkering, large undulating greens, and water or gorges on 14 of the 18 holes characterize the challenge of this championship course. The playing values of the River course are a match for its natural beauty.
Since opening in 1988, the River course has quickly earned a reputation as being among the country’s very best. Ranking #15 in Golf Digest’s 2017/2018 America’s 100 Greatest Public Golf Courses and #19 in GolfWeek’s 2017 Best Resort Courses. GOLF Magazine says this course “must be considered the nation’s finest public-access course of modern times.”
The course itself experiences severe elevation changes that is easy to foresee when considering that the eastern side of the Kohler area meets Lake Michigan, whilst the west rises to higher plains with Blackwolf Run stuck in the middle. The elevation changes are subsidised by the protection offered by its inland setting, but in saying that, precise course management is still paramount at Blackwolf Run, because there are still many challenges that lie in wait.
