The Peninsula Kingswood Country Golf Club is located on the southern end of Melbourne’s famous Sandbelt golf region. It is home to two championship golf courses, The North and the South, and has all the practice facilities fit for a world-class golf resort. Kingswood has a history dating back to 1904, which is long for Australian standards. Originally known as the Dandenong Golf Club, a committee formed in the 1920s to investigate a new site after their old site was intruded upon by Melbourne’s expanding suburbs. In 1937, the Club took up residence on 120 acres of undulating garden land in Dingley Village, which was subsequently named “Kingswood.”

Two golf courses have since been created; they were designed by Mick and Vernon Morcom, veterans of the Sandbelt region’s golf course design. Since then, the prestige and renown of the Kingswood North and South course has only grown. Visitors from Interstate or Overseas are welcome during certain periods of the week. Such visitors will need to be members of a recognized golf club, with a current membership identification card or a letter of introduction from their home club. Nearby golf courses include The National Golf Club Long Island, The Metropolitan and Commonwealth Golf Club. It is best to stay either in Melbourne or on the Mornington Peninsula while you play the southern Sandbelt golf courses.

Golf Course Information

Longer, flatter and more open than The North, with stunning views across its fairways, the South Course is characterised by its creek lines and dry-stone walls. Bunkering and green design put a premium on positioning from the tee. The South Course is a true test of strategic golf, built in the traditional Sandbelt style. The uniqueness of the Melbourne Sandbelt region lies not in the sandy soil on which its many golf courses rest upon, but the native Australian bushland which its courses weave their way through. Many golf course destinations have sand-based soil, but Australia’s Sandbelt region has the added dimension of dense foliage that cannot be found in combination with the sandy soil anywhere on the world. The Kingswood Golf Courses make full use of both these elements.

The large bunkers again feature on the South course, but the greens are smaller, and the trees occur more frequently on the course than simply grazing the sides as they do on the North Course. It makes for a strategic nightmare if you don’t know how to plan your hole. The level of forethought needed makes the South Course demanding, as the approach shots around the green can get very tricky at the best of times; every golfer must be thinking about how to approach each green way before they ever get there. The South Course does not have as much of a famous reputation as The North Course, but recent construction and new resort facilities finished in 2019 will allow the South Course to grow in stature without the baggage of having 4-years of construction around the precinct overshadowing the tranquil lands that the courses are set upon.
