Flinders Golf Course

Mornington Peninsula, Victoria

About

Location

Discover

Founded in 1903, and located on the southeast corner of Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula, Flinders Golf Club is one of Australia’s oldest golf courses. The facility is wedged between Bass Strait and the township of Flinders which was named after the explorer Matthew Flinders. Designed by a handful of people, those most notable are Dr Alister MacKenzie (Augusta National, Royal Melbourne) who visited the Club in 1926 and changed various aspects of the design. Originally designed by Scotsman Myles Maxwell, who was the Club Champion, the club has remained semi-rural ever since, and does not get much attention from visitors. It remains a gem to play, and is one of the only golf courses in the Southern Hemisphere where you can see the ocean from every hole. The best time to visit Flinders between October – April. It is the perfect golf course to include on your Mornington Peninsula holiday, with other courses like Cape Schanck Resort, The National’s Old or Gunnamatta, St Andrews Beach and The Dunes also good additions.

Golf Course Information

The Flinders Golf Course is a relatively short course compared to nearby golf courses. This is due to where it lies; the site simply cannot be expanded as it is wedged between cliffs and the township. Its challenges come not in the form of distance, but the prevailing southwesterly winds, small greens and tight fairways. The golf course also has undulating fairways with many lies creating difficulties for the next shot. Add to that compact sand in every bunker, and you’ll have a difficult day on the golf course.

The setting is picturesque, with the ocean in view for all 18-holes. Flinders isn’t known as a challenging course, but if there is any wind, especially coming from the sea, the challenge increases dramatically. There are no championships held at Flinders Golf Club, and it is seen as more of a ‘country’ course, but the Voyages.golf plays it regularly and we think it is a relatively undiscovered gem, akin to Cape Schanck Resort. It is a must-play if you are visiting the area.
