Kingston Heath Golf Club has one of the best golf courses in the world and some argue the best in Australia. It certainly gives Royal Melbourne a run for its money; it has been laid out on the same sandy soil that comprises Melbourne’s famous Sandbelt region and features the characteristic bunkers that makes the region’s golf courses so prominent. The course was designed by Dan Souter and Dr Alister MacKenzie, but the course was constructed by Royal Melbourne groundskeeper Mick Morcom, and the club was founded in 1909. Overall, the course is a fantastic, world-class facility that should feature in every golfer’s bucket list. We recommend playing Kingston Heath and other nearby Sandbelt golf courses including Commonwealth Golf Club, Victoria Golf Club and Peninsula Kingswood South Course. It is best to stay in Melbourne and rent a vehicle during your stay, but transfers can be arranged.

Golf Course Information

The Kingston Heath Golf Course, designed by Dan Souter and Alister MacKenzie, was ready for play in 1925 and has never looked back. The course has hosted Australian Opens, Women’s Opens, the Australian Masters, and the World Cup of Golf. The 2009 Australian Masters was won by Tiger Woods in 2009, and he praised the bunkers for their world-class design. The course is maintained to perfection, its bunkers and use of natural undulations often wreak havoc on the average golfer’s scorecard. The dense scrub and bush-land surrounding each hole make it increasingly difficult to get a golf ball back on the fairway, and it is the combination of obstacles in a timeless layout that makes Kingston Heath so revered.

Kingston Heath is a championship golf course through and through, the greens are generally large, but with equally large bunkers often surrounding each green, getting on and staying on is a top priority with every approach shot. The course favours iron-shots that can carry the often-disastrous undergrowth that comprises much of the course. It can seem daunting with so much foliage and such large bunkers everywhere on the course, but if you manage to avoid them your scorecard should look reasonable. The course demands strategy, the same as Royal Melbourne, Kingswood North and South, and other Sandbelt courses. It is a timeless design that makes full use of uniquely-Australian surroundings.
