Homepage / United Kingdom / England / Formby Ladies Golf Club
Residing on England’s Golf Coast in Lancashire, Formby Ladies Golf Club is wedged between the Irish Sea and the small town of Formby. The 18-hole golf course, designed by Douglas McEwan, sits in the middle of the Formby Men’s Golf Club. The two courses are best played one after the other and comprise 36-hole of excellent links golf among a stunning backdrop of a pine plantation. The Ladies Golf Club was created in 1896 and is one of the oldest ladies-only golf clubs in the world.
Host of the 2021 Staysure PGA Seniors Championship, Formby Ladies Golf Club is a delight to play and offers some respite from the difficult links courses along England’s Golf Coast. The other courses consist of Royal Lytham & St Annes, Hillside Golf Club, Royal Birkdale and Royal Liverpool. Greg Norman offered his compliments to the test that is Formby Ladies Golf Course: “Over 100 years old and still your course can stand the test of time. What a beautiful course. It clearly shows that courses do not have to be 7,000 yards plus to be formidable.”
The golf course is set amongst a pine plantation but plays like a links course. Challenges come in the form of tight fairways, heathery rough and well-protected greens. It provides visitors with a varied challenge and rewards precision shot-making. It does offer respite from the formidable ‘Royal’ links courses along the Lancashire coast, but Formby Ladies is not without its challenges, and the scenery is stunning.
Several holes have elevated tees providing excellent views over the golf course and towards the Irish Sea, whilst the par 3 holes are some of the most difficult you can encounter. The course is carved from sand dunes, and lies on the same ground that its neighbour the Formby Men’s Golf Club resides. Very little has changed about the course and the result is a more natural feel to the course than the Men’s, with little alteration and endemic heather rough, it is reminiscent of the Sunningdale New Course.
Because Formby Ladies and Formby Mens Golf Clubs are owned and operated by the same company, the facilities are shared. The Ladies Clubhouse is a lot smaller than the Men’s, but offers a selection of foods, beverages and coffee throughout opening hours which are either 0830 to 1830 during summer, and 0830 to 1630 during winter. You are welcome to dine and enjoy your post-round meal in the Formby Golf Clubhouse.
