One of Asia’s most highly regarded golf resorts, Thailand’s Siam Country Club carries many awards and accolades including Best Course in Thailand (Old), Best Golf Course in 206 Countries by Golf Digest¸ and host of the Honda LPGA over 10 times since 2007. Situated just 20-minutes inland from the resort town of Pattaya, and under 90-minutes’ drive from Bangkok, Siam Country Club and its Old Course must not be missed on your Thailand golf holiday. The other two golf courses are the Plantation Course and Waterside Course. We recommend playing all three during your Pattaya golf holiday.
Designed initially by Isao Mazumi in the 70s, the Old Course at Siam Country Club was recently renovated by Mr Lee Schmidt of Schmidt-Curley Design Incorporated. Seashore Paspalum grass was used for the fairways whilst the greens use Novotek, allowing for championship golf year-round. There are 101 bunkers on the golf course that create the backbone of challenges present on the course. A classic parkland layout that utilises a combination of trees, water features, varied fairway rough cuts and terrain changes, The Old Course at Siam Country Club is a fantastic example of championship parkland golf.
The renovation changes by Lee Schmidt noticeably removed many trees that were obscuring lines of sight around the course and most notably on holes that doglegged. The removal of the trees, whilst removing a big obstacle, made the course open to frequent breezes throughout the complex and another challenge arose. While not as severe as seaside links golf course breezes, it added another element to contend with for scoring below-par. Overall the Old Course at Siam Country Club is one of Thailand, and indeed Asia’s best, the greens are varied in shape and size, whilst the bunkers offer a wow-factor of championship quality. We could not recommend playing this course highly enough.
A large clubhouse stands near the first tee and houses everything you need either before or after your round. Recent renovations gave the clubhouse a facelift, so the facilities are noticeably world-class. It sits high over the courses, overlooking the Old Course and valley housing all its courses. A restaurant is open daily from 06.30 AM to 7PM, serving a wide array of Western and Asian cuisines. Locker rooms are available to guests and are complimentary with your round. Practice Facilities are available at the Waterside Course where you will find a full-length driving range, an 18-hole miniature putting green and short-game chipping area.
