Real Club de Golf Sotogrande, or Sotogrande as its short name is known, is one of Spain’s best golf course and the first European course designed by golf architect extraordinaire Robert Trent Jones Senior. The golf club opened in 1964 and gained instant fame due to Robert Trent Jones’ fame. Located near the Mediterranean Sea on Spain’s South Coast, Sotogrande’s fame on the international stage has only increased through the years, with its highlight occurring in 1994 when King Juan Carlos granted Sotogrande the title of Real, which is the Spanish version of the United Kingdom’s Royal status. You must know that there is a handicap limit to play Sotogrande: Men are required to have a handicap below 24, whilst ladies need a handicap of 30 or below.
Widely considered one of Robert Trent Jones’ best golf course designs, Sotogrande showcases the best of the architect’s genius. Beautifully integrated hole routing with the landscape highlights Jones’ design philosophy of offering a challenge but retaining a level of accessibility for golfers of every level.
The course itself offers drives off the tees with wide fairways. The greens are mostly elevated from the approaching fairways and run very fast, whilst Sotogrande’s greenside bunkers pose some of the biggest threats to golfers’ scorecards. The greens are the biggest challenge to ordinary golfers though, but wide-open fairways allow for fun-loving big hitters to have a blast, or average golfers not to worry about constantly losing their ball (except in the various water hazards). There are around 100 bunkers on the course with almost 70 of them surrounding greens, which demonstrates Jones’ vivaciousness in forcing accuracy when around the greens.
The diversity in vegetation will offer all golfers a respite from their usual courses with cork oaks, pine trees and palm trees, combined with a number of other species all creating a well-balanced blend of golf holes that suits every calibre of golfer. Sotogrande is a splendid course that embodies the traditional game of golf whilst welcoming visitors, despite being a private-members club. It is a course that comes highly recommended by those who get the chance to play it and if you plan on travelling to Southern Spain, a visit to Real Club de Golf Sotogrande should be on your itinerary.
Practice facilities at Sotogrande are extensive and consist of a putting green, short game area, driving range and short par-3 golf course that you can warm-up on. It is a fantastic golf facility that carries all the prestige of a golf course with Spain’s royal ‘Real’ grant before its name.
The Sotogrande clubhouse houses an upmarket restaurant that keeps inline with the high level of regard by which the private member’s club is regarded. Fine-dining with a bar and alcohol served every day of the week awaits golfers after your round. The fully-stoked pro-shop is also located in the clubhouse and comes equipped with all the latest golf attire, accessories and equipment including Sotogrande’s own-branded golf gear, so you can take home a piece of the club after your round.
