Voted the top golf resort in New Zealand in 2010 by World Travel Awards, Terrace Downs has an 18-hole championship golf course. The alpine views are spectacular, while the golf course itself is a fun challenge to all golfers from the novice to professional. Designed by David Cox and Puddicombe Golf Design, the Terrace Downs golf course is set on 550 acres, with the Ralaia river crisscrossing the golf course. It opened for 1999 and has a par of 72, with length measuring just over 7,006 yards (6,406m). Over eleven lakes and seventy bunkers come into play.
Golfers often feel as if the front nine has a parkland feel that can be attributed to the shelter provided by heavily wooded areas, while the back nine is more open and offers a more ‘Scottish’ demeanour. Elevation changes, high-grassed wastelands, doglegs involving lakes and trees, and challenging greens make for an excellent golf course in central Canterbury. Terrace Downs is a golf course that should be played more than once to get the best feel for the area and stunning land it resides on.
