Sun City Golf Resort

Pilanesberg National Park – South Africa
Sun City International, known as Sun City, is home to a golfer’s paradise. Nestled in the rolling hills of the Pilanesberg National Park, just 90 minutes drive from Johannesburg in the North West Province. Sun City is a sprawling metropolis of hotels, restaurants, golf courses, and resort amenities that has earned the reputation of Africa’s “Kingdom of Pleasure.” Home to two hotels, and world-class restaurants, Sun City is home to two championship golf courses known as The Gary Player Country Club and Lost City Country Club. The former was the first to be built in 1979; it is home to the Nedbank Golf Challenge and is considered the better of the two golf courses by PGA standards. The Lost City Course was built in 1992 with a layout that is more accessible to club golfers and holidaymakers but still alluring in its design. Sun City is the northern equivalent to Fancourt Resort (on the southern Garden Route), with both facilities ranking in the top South African golf courses consistently.

    Golf Course Information

    Gary Player Country Club

The Gary Player Golf Course is strictly walking, no carts are available. Construction began in 1978 on this South African masterpiece. It is ranked as one of the most prestigious golf courses on the African continent as a par-72, championship layout. It is also home to the annual Nedbank Golf Challenge (since 1981) which forms part of the DP World Tour’s race to Dubai. This championship layout was assisted by legendary architect Ron Kirby and measures just over 7,000 yards from the back tees. Considered better than the Lost City Course, the Gary Player Course is much more challenging and befitting a tournament-hosting golf course. Luckily, various tees make the course accessible to the club golfer; the challenges come in the form of tricky greens, strategically placed bunkers and water. Some holes are so oddly shaped that it challenges the conventions of golf architecture to its core.

    Lost City Country Club

The second golf course to arrive at the sprawling Sun City Resort was the Lost City Golf Course. Designed by South African Gary Player, this 18-hole, the desert-style golf course is more forgiving than its sister course. It features wide fairways with a series of lakes that separates the ninth with the finishing hole, while covering 100 hectares and over 28,000 square metres of water features. The famous 13th hole features a green shaped into the African continent. The Lost City Course was designed to supplement the Gary Player Country Club Course. It is more forgiving and in some ways more scenic than the original course which makes it a favourite for club golfers. Whilst the original course is relatively flat, the Lost City Course plays over more varied terrain. Watch out for the crocodiles on the 13th! Both golf courses at Sun City are fantastic displays of golf architecture. World-class maintenance and course conditioning make for a fun round whichever golf course you play at Sun City.

    Accommodation

Sun City Resort is a city unto itself. No other Resort in the Southern Hemisphere has as many amenities for a Resort; choose from 5-star at the Cascades, the original Sun City Hotel or The Palace in Rustenburg.

    Sun City Hotel

With nine room types to choose from, the Sun City Hotel was the first to be built and qualifies as a 4-star. Traditional decor with soft warm lighting awaits. Choose from Superior, Luxury, or Suite categories ranging from King or Twin-share rooms. Common amenities include a flat-screen TV, air conditioning, a safe, hairdryers, as well as complimentary tea and coffee, and a balcony overlooking the beautiful Resort with lake or swimming pool views. The rooms are relatively spacious with a relaxed feel. Considered entry-level for the Resort, you would be able to relax in comfort at the Sun City Hotel at an affordable price.

    The Cascades Hotel

Named for the waterfalls and calming pools that trickle throughout the property, the 5-star Cascades Hotel is an oasis of calm in the midst of the Sun City Resort and in close proximity to all the amenities. The biggest difference to the Sun City Hotel is that the Cascades is more centrally located and the rooms are designed with an old-world charm that has been intertwined with modern luxuries. The desk lamps have large shades and the chairs speak of an old-world opulence that were found in colonial days of old. The modern luxuries include plush bedding, bathroom amenities, and sleek in-room furnishings that reflect an order of magnitude higher than the original Sun City Hotel. Choose from Luxury rooms, Superior rooms, or a range of suites that are individually designed and decorated so no two stays are the same.

    The Palace Hotel

The Palace is classified as a 5-star hotel. Its rooms are designed to reflect everything that the Cascades and Sun City Hotels are not. With an opulent design tilted at a distinctly ‘African’ style of luxury, the Palace is a rush on the senses where The Cascade is a more refined luxury. The entrance hall of The Palace sets the precedent, with its intricately painted ceilings, mosaic artworks, and golden zebra-hide upholstered furniture. Set within verdant gardens, each luxurious room in the hotel boasts handcrafted furniture, befitting royalty.

    Resort Dining

The Sun City Resort has three hotels and two golf courses which make for a large set of dining outlets. In total, there are 22 dining outlets to choose from, all peppered through the Resort with their own distinct flavours and dress codes. Both The Lost City and Gary Player Country Clubs have restaurants in the clubhouses so there is no risk of going hungry at Sun City Resort!

    Resort Facilities

The Sun City Resort can be aptly described as a sprawling metropolis. The Resort amenities are almost incomprehensible, so much so that there is a welcome centre that is centrally located to help you find the right amenities. You can even rent a car through Hertz at the Resort. At this welcome centre, you can book your favourite activities, excursions and safaris.

    Activities range from:

    • Segway Tours
    • Hot Air Balloon Tours
    • Game Tracking
    • Bicycle Tours
    • Archery
    • Ziplines
