The first golf club in Africa was Royal Cape Golf Club, formerly known as ‘Cape Golf Club.’ Its origins extend to 1885, where the beginnings of Africa’s golf scene were established with views of nearby Table Mountain. The golf course at Royal Cape has evolved successfully over time into a parkland, 18-hole route with a proven track record. The Golf Club has hosted the Cape Town Open since 2021 and 10 previous South African Opens. You will find the full suite of facilities, excellent service and a golf course worth playing on your South Africa holiday. Nearby golf destinations include Steenberg Golf Club, Clovelly Estate, Devonvale Estate and Westlake Golf Club.
Golf Course Information
Tree-lined fairways set out over relatively flat terrain, and the odd water feature comprise Royal Cape Golf Club. Views of the iconic Table Mountain provide constant reassurance you are in Cape Town throughout your round. Narrow fairways lead to greens often protected by three or four greenside bunkers that demand precision with every shot. The various lakes and ponds will prove disastrous if you thin your shot, but it is an otherwise immaculately-kept golf course that deserves its ‘Royal’ title.
The Royal Cape golf course has presented a fantastic challenge to the Pros of the events it has hosted over the years. A near-constant wind that reflects the tumultuous weather offered by the Cape of Good Hope can disrupt your first tee-shot or your homeward stretch. The greens run true with excellent definitions on the bent-grass fairway cuts. The original Western Cape golf course, Royal Cape Golf Club presents a real test of golf that accommodates every calibre of golfer.

The Royal Cape Golf Club features a full-length open-bay driving range to practise your golf swing before or after your round. The tees are set on grass mowed to course conditions year-round and rotated to keep the conditions tournament-worthy. A short-game chipping area and practice putting green complete the Royal Cape Golf Club’s practice facilities.
Pro Shop & Clubhouse
The golf club features a well-stocked Pro Shop with the latest and greatest golf brands for ladies and men. Stop by to pick up Royal Cape-branded golf balls and apparel; you may need both a rain jacket or hat during your round. The clubhouse at Royal Cape Golf Club features a great restaurant where you can grab a bite to eat before your round or a meal after. It serves alcoholic beverages to accompany your lunch.
