    Golf Course Information

    Golf

The Fairmont in St Andrews has world renowned golf and was voted 18th in ‘The World’s Top Golf Resorts’ b Conde Nast Traveler reader’s poll and ranked number 22 in “The World’s Best Golf Hotels” by Golf Digest.

    Torrance Course

Designed by Sam Torrance, the course has a links style design and is a par-72, coming in at 6,611 metres / 7,230 yards. Perched on a clifftop overlooking the North Sea, the Torrance course offers risk/reward opportunities on many holes. Deep bunkers around fairways lead to challenging approach shots to greens with frequent run-off areas and surrounding hollows. Dennis Griffiths and the late Gene Sarazen also had a hand in designing the course, but the course underwent a significant refurbishment lead by Gary Stephenson before reopening in 2009 with improvements to the tees, fairways, irrigation and drainage.

Now the course has been rated as number 26 by Golf Weekly’s ratings for 2013 and has been used as an Open Championship qualifying course for the 2010 open, whilst also hosting the Seniors European Tour Event 6 times from 2009 to 2014. The course is an exciting work of links layout with dramatic drops over sheer rock cliffs that tumble into the North Sea, and as expected of a 5-star resort, the course is kept in immaculate condition by very dedicated grounds keepers.

    Kittocks Course

Designed by Bruce Devlin, with a hand from the late Gene Sarazen, the Kittocks course has a par of 72, and is 6,576 metres / 7,192 yards long. The course opened in 2001 and runs alongside the coastline, providing stunning views across the Eden Estuary and North Sea. It is a much more challenging course than its sibling, the Torrance, and requires nerves of steel as many approach shots from fairways to greens that sit downhill to small greens.

The Kittocks course provides a significant test of skill, courage and heart, with each shot on the fairways tested by the contours of the natural environment. Though this challenge is offset by the option of four tees, allowing play for golfers of any handicap. When the wind blows, it favours people who can strike the ball on a powerful but low trajectory. Many holes have interesting designs which never fail to delight and intrigue golfers, with the famous par-5 fifteenth featuring a steep dog-leg sitting adjacent to a steep drop to the sea. Overall the Kittocks golf course is a fantastic work that incorporates natural obstacles into its design whilst including a few man made lakes that blend with the fairway contours marvellously; the course is a must-play when on your St Andrews golf holiday.
