The Duke’s Golf Course St Andrews

St Andrews, Fife, Scotland

About

Location

Discover

With a spectacular setting above St Andrews, the championship course at The Duke’s gives magnificent panoramic views over the surrounding countryside to the sea. Belonging to the famous Old Course Hotel, now owned by Kohler, The Duke’s is highly regarded as one of the finest heath-land championship courses in the British Isles and a must-play course for any golfer; it is also the only non-links golf course in St Andrews, which provides a welcome respite for those wanting to add a top-quality course of different design to their Scotland golf trip. The course lies in Scotland’s Kingdom of Fife, not far from St Andrews Links Old Course, Eden Course, Castle Course and Kingsbarns. Various images courtesy of The Duke’s St Andrews.

Golf Course Information

The Duke’s style ranks alongside the great inland challenges, which demand accuracy and inventive play as well as power golf. And with five separate tee positions at every hole, The Duke’s has the flexibility and challenge to appeal to golfers at every level, with the venue being chosen to host the 2014 International European Amateur Championship, one of the four majors in the world of amateur golf.

What you see is what you get at Duke’s; the heath-land/parkland setting is just that, and that means tighter fairways, strategically placed bunkers and inclined terrain both from the tees to the greens. This contrasts to the wide-open fairways, pot bunkers and slight rolling terrain of the seaside links of Scotland and Ireland. The difference in bunkers compared to the local pot bunkers of the area is immense; they are larger, flatter and sometimes line the entire side of both fairways and draw influence from the famous Sandbelt golf course bunkers of Melbourne, Australia. Instead of opting to recreate the surrounding links courses, Peter Thompson and his partner Ross Perrett decided on the heath-land course to offer diversity to golfers visiting the Fife region, but the course still has sea-views and wonderful views over St Andrews town.

In 2006 Tim Liddy revised and renovated the course, making significant bunker alterations, inserting 3 new holes and re manufacturing the greens on holes 13 to 15. Additionally, the Club as made improvements on fairway drainage so that the heath-land style comes to the fore in every weather event. Overall the playability of the course is, although a guaranteed challenge, a fun and exciting round with numerous choices of tee-boxes enabling play for golfers with any handicap.
