Future Open Championship Venues

Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland

The Open Championship, often referred to simply as “The Open,” is one of golf’s prestigious major championships held annually. Established in 1860, it is the oldest among the four majors. The tournament is hosted by various renowned golf courses in the United Kingdom, showcasing the sport’s rich history and tradition. Known for its challenging links-style courses and unpredictable weather conditions, The Open demands exceptional skill and adaptability from competitors. Golf legends like Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, and Tom Watson have left an indelible mark on The Open’s storied history, making it a pinnacle event in the world of golf.

The Open Championship is golf’s oldest major, and more noticeably more prestigious without the relatively low winner’s purse compared to the other majors.

The R&A (Royal & Ancient Golf Club) manages The Open Championship, and have released the future venues for the renowned tournament. In the United Kingdom (including Northern Ireland), there exists a selection of links golf courses where The Open is played on rotation every several years; it is known as The Open Rota, and it consists of some of the finest links courses in the world. The most well-known include The Old Course at St Andrews, Carnoustie Golf Links and Royal Troon Golf Club (all in Scotland, the Home of Golf).

The annual event is played in July, across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The last Open Championship held in Northern Ireland was the 148th Open at Royal Portrush Golf Club (Dunluce Course) in 2019. The occasion marked 67 years since The Open had been played in Northern Ireland and outside mainland UK; the event drew crowds of over almost a quarter of a million people over the week, and set its own attendance record for a championship staged outside St Andrews.
