Dublin’s Carton House has signed a historic deal of ownership change to the Accor Group, with plans to rebrand it as a Fairmont by the end of 2020. The historic hotel with two golf courses will be called the Fairmont Carton House by the end of 2020. The Irish Times has reported that ownership of the hotel will remain unchanged. It is owned by the Belmullet Hospitality Group and John Mullen, an Irish-American businessman, has been involved with the hotel since 2017.
As travel restrictions are lifted around the world, expect your next visit to the iconic Dublin Golf Resort to be under a new name. Located in County Kildare, Carton House is just 20-minutes’ drive from Dublin. It has seen ups and downs since its establishment in 1739, including the Great Famine and more recent Irish Troubles.
Recent times have seen Carton House has established itself as a classic Dublin landmark, with its Montgomerie golf course designed by Scotsman Colin Montgomerie, and the O’Meara golf course designed by Phil O’Meara. Two championship golf courses provide fantastic parkland and inland links layouts so close to Dublin; it is no wonder Fairmont has moved to acquire the prestigious property. The two golf courses will remain unchanged in terms of routing, as the main changes will be turf quality around the tees and greens. Most of the million-euro budget is to be spent on the hotel as an enhancement of luxury under Accor’s wing, which is over 100 years old.
The new refurbishment under The Fairmont will result in 170 bedrooms and suites, and touch-ups to its two golf courses are to be included. The multi-million euro project is expected to bring Carton House back under the eye of international golfers in 2021, the same year of the 150th Open Championship in St Andrews. Fairmont has over 75 hotels to its name, whilst its French owner Accor controls over 5000 hotels across 110 countries. The Fairmont Carton House of 2020 is expected to bring a heightened sense of luxury to County Kildare; though we expect the Resort exterior retain its old-world charm.
