Dom Pedro’s Millennium golf course resides in the heart of the Algarve’s Vilamoura region of Portugal. A stunning parkland layout designed by renowned golf course architect Martin Hawtree, the golf course aesthetic is almost unrivalled in the region and that is a testament both to the architect and the natural geography that the course sits. It opened at the turn of the millennium in the year 2000, and nine of its eighteen holes once formed part of the 27-hole Laguna golf course, but Martin Hawtree’s refurbishment and creation of a new back nine saw the Millennium Course at Dom Pedro conceived. The other golf courses at Dom Pedro Resort are The Old, Victoria, and Pinhal golf courses. We recommend either staying at the Resort or the nearby Anantara Resort, or Lake Spa Resort.
A more open course than its neighbours at Dom Pedro, the Millennium golf course is laid in classic parkland fashion, but Umbrella-shaped pine trees are peppered everywhere you look. You will notice this especially on the opening nine, and in particular holes 3-7, where doglegs meander through heavily treed areas that create some tranquil moments if you are not too busy trying to navigate the trees with an errant shot. Other hazards include a number of lakes on the back nine, especially the closing holes, and tight greens that must be approached with caution throughout the eighteen-hole route.
The par 72 golf course measures 6,754 yards and 6,176 metres, which is a great deal shorter than some of its Dom Pedro siblings but ultimately the usual length for a modern course. The lack of excessively long holes such as you would find on Victoria golf course and The Old Course at Dom Pedro reduces the difficulty of the Millennium golf course, but you must not become complacent otherwise the course will knock you around. Beware of the breeze that picks up throughout the day and takes a bite out of your score towards the closing holes as you play through more open ground.
When playing at Dom Pedro’s Millennium golf course, you will have access to a free shuttle both to and from Vilamoura hotels, a clubhouse located near the first tee, a golf shop located within the clubhouse, and bar/restaurant that serves refreshments and meals before and after your round. Practice facilities consist of a putting green and chipping area, as well as a full-length driving range. Value for money and five golf courses establishes Dom Pedro as one of the outstanding golf complexes in Portugal’s Algarve region.
