The host of 12 New Zealand Opens, a record unsurpassed by any other course; Paraparaumu Beach Golf Course has long been regarded by many as the spiritual home of New Zealand Golf. Considered one of the best links courses in the Southern Hemisphere, Paraparaumu Beach Golf Course has been modelled on the best links courses found in Ireland and Britain. Located just north of Wellington, you must experience the challenging course to really understand why golf at Paraparaumu Beach is at its purest. The Golf Club is just a 45-minute drive from Wellington’s city centre. Paraparaumu Beach Golf Links is just over 30-minutes from the Royal Wellington Golf Club.
Each hole on the Paraparaumu Beach Golf Course is individually named and each tells their own story, be it about the layout, the orientation, or the test I provides the golfer. It is a course for those who are serious about golf and want nothing more than to challenge themselves on what truly is a fantastic challenge. The undulations are wild, and the pot bunkers are often hidden behind the rolling hills of the fairways so that you won’t find your ball until you fall on the sand! It is a course that is near the ocean but still surrounded by suburbia, so the focus of the golf game at Paraparaumu beach rests solely on the 18-hole course. It is a course that evokes thoughts of Scottish links with undulating fairways, deep pot bunkers and wild greens that offer an exhilarating test of golfing ability without being impossible.
Luckily the facility recognised the difficulties of the links golf course and wanted it to be an enjoyable experience for everyone; there are six separate tee boxes for males and four for ladies, with great variations in length. If the wind is up, you can choose a shorter tee-box, or if you want a challenge, select the longer ones, but either way, the varying lengths warrant playing the course multiple times in varying weather conditions.
The Golf Club’s facilities at Paraparaumu Beach consist of clubrooms with lockers, a bar and restaurant. The bar is open every day except Tuesday in winter, normally from mid-afternoon. The restaurant, however, is open every day from 9am to 6pm; special arrangements can be made for visiting groups by contacting the office. In the evening, a ‘sundowner’ overlooking the 18th green on the veranda is a favourite among members. The Club has a putting green to warm up on, but no other practice facilities; this is due to a lack of space, they are surrounded by buildings. The fact that it is a links course too means that driving the ball is not the main focus on the course, it is the short game that counts.
