Known famously as Rotorua’s only Geothermal golf course, the Rotorua Golf Club is named in Maori as ‘Arikikapakapa’, which means ‘’the gentle sound of plopping mud.’’ The geothermal activity occurring in the Rotorua region offers a unique golfing experience at Rotorua Golf Club with sublime natural geography that welcomes a golf course to the region’s naturally abundant flora. Golfers often see steam vents during play either from the course itself or the nearby Pohutu geyser, which is the largest active geyser in the Southern Hemisphere. The golf course at Rotorua is an excellent way to complete the geothermal experience or a Taupo golf travel package; its roots trace back to 1902.

Golf Course Information

The Rotorua golf course is classified as parkland due to the abundance of trees throughout its 18 holes, though it tends to play like an inland links golf course. The Club welcomes visitors year-round, and getting a tee-time at your desired hour is not difficult with prior planning. A distinct variety of unique features makes Rotorua a worthwhile golf course to play. Mud pools and steam vents actually come into play on the golf course, while the 9th green boasts a Sulphur mound that must be avoided at all costs. The natural beauty found on the golf course is akin to the nearby Wairakei Golf and Sanctuary in Taupo. The fourteenth hole at Rotorua is its signature hole with a large geothermal crater that protects its left flank and entry is not permitted, so bring spare golf balls.

The golf course is easily walkable, but the golf shop has carts for hire if you prefer. Golf Digest New Zealand has ranked Rotorua Golf Club within the country’s Top 50 Golf Courses. The design, layout and golf course features have all been added to over the years into what is now a well-regarded and sought-after destination for golfers visiting Rotorua. A lake straddles the fourteenth, fifteenth and sixteenth holes, but the eighteenth is a prime climax golf hole with an elevated tee overlooking the Whakarewarewa thermal reserve and surrounding woodlands.

Venue Information

Inside the Rototura Golf Clubhouse, golfers will find a fully licensed bar and restaurant open from breakfast each day so you can enjoy a pre or post-game meal and beverage. The Clubhouse also contains changing rooms and showers and welcomes visitors. Golfers who are looking to practice their swings before a round can enjoy the use of the driving range at Rotorua Golf Club which is adjacent to a short-game pitching area and putting green. The golf shop is located in the Clubhouse, and the staff can assist with any rentals, course knowledge or questions.
