Located in Charlotte, North Carolina, the Quail Hollow Club is a private country club and golf course founded by James Harri sin 1959. The golf club has hosted several championships including the Kemper Open from 1969-79, the World Seniors Invitational from 1980-89, the Wells Fargo Championship 2003-present, the 99th PGA Championship 2017, and numerous others. The golf course was designed by George Cobb in a parkland layout of championship quality; few other golf courses could hold so many tournaments without the legacy of its original architect shining through. Further enhancements to the golf course include golf course designers Arnold Palmer in 1986 and Tom Fazio in 1997 and 2003. The Quail Hollow Club is also host, for the first time, to the 2022 Presidents Cup golf tournament.
The Quail Hollow Golf Course is highly coveted as a championship tournament golf course that is especially hard to get a tee-time at. The golf course has been modified since its creation in 1961, in the 80s, 90s and 2016. The constant revisions and enhancements on the course over the years have kept it in world-class conditions, allowing it to host a plethora of golf competitions. Your chance to play it is limited due to it being a private members golf club; your only two ways of playing are being invited by a member or qualifying for one of the many tournaments played each year at the Quail Hollow Club.
The biggest obstacles on Quail Hollow golf course come in the form of tree-lined fairways that are doglegged, fairway and massive green-side bunkers, and subtle greens that create many difficulties for the amateur golfer. Golf Digest has rated the golf course as #115 in ‘America’s Second 100 Greatest Golf Courses.’ Quail Hollow has many risk/reward scoring opportunities with long carries involving water, bunkers and natural hollows that can mean the difference between a par and double bogey. The golf course bunkers reflect Dr Alister MacKenzie’s bunker-style that are oddly shaped, large and plentiful; seen most commonly at Royal Melbourne Golf Club and Victoria Golf Club. Tom Fazio’s most recent improvements have been implemented to create a dynamic route of 18-holes for the 2021 Presidents Cup, occurring from September 30th to October 3rd, 2021.
Because Quail Hollow is a private member club, the facilities are for exclusive use for members and invited guests. Facilities include a full-length, open-bay driving range, putting green and short-game chipping and pitching area.
The clubhouse was established in plantation-style with arched windows, white-washed exteriors with columns supporting verandahs, and New York-style lamps lining paved footpaths. Very much an exclusive members-club, Quail Hollow has tennis courts, a swimming pool, indoor restaurant with fantastic locker facilities and more.
