Donegal Golf Club

County Donegal, Ireland

Discover

Nestled on Ireland’s north-west coast is the famous Donegal Golf Club,  situated on the Murvagh Peninsula in South Donegal. Nearby golf courses include County Sligo Golf Club, Lough Erne Resort and Rosapenna Resort. The Donegal Golf Club is just over 2 hours’ drive from Belfast, one hour from Londonderry, just under three hours from Dublin, and only 10 minutes from Donegal Town. The Golf Club sits along Ireland’s famous Wild Atlantic Way, with its isolation and surrounds making for some awe-inspiring golf. It is likened to Scotland’s Muirfield golf course, but it is unique in that it is one of Europe’s longest golf courses at 7,453 yards from the championship tees. Donegal Golf Club invokes everything that golf romantics seek: challenging golf, traditional Irish Links, surrounded by panoramic views of the rugged coast of Western Ireland.

Golf Course Information

The Donegal Golf Club’s links course was initially designed by Ireland’s own Eddie Hacket, widely considered a links-golf genius. The golf course is relatively new in Irish terms, with the club opening for play in 1973. Pat Ruddy was commissioned in 1992 to elongate the links course with some modern characteristics that now see the golf course play to its prolonged length. Friendlier tee-boxes counteract the difficulty of the course’s length for the amateur and visiting golfers, so the golf course can be thoroughly enjoyed by all. The nearby Bluestack Mountains provide a dramatic backdrop for Donegal Golf Club.

Characteristic of Ireland’s links golf courses, Donegal Golf Club is frequently subjected to harsh winds of the Atlantic Ocean, and its low-lying position with ocean surrounding three sides of the course exposes the course to the weather. The Golf Club proffers a welcome break from other links golf courses, noticeably void of towering sand dunes like the ones seen at Ballybunion, Royal Troon, Doonbeg, and Carne Links. Visiting golfers can expect an exhilarating round of golf that is easily walkable, on a peninsula that is immersed in local and ancient history. Donegal Golf Club is one of Ireland’s top links golf courses that flies under the radar; it is well worth a visit and will be a highlight of your trip along The Wild Atlantic Way.
