Waterville Golf Links

County Kerry, Ireland

About

Location

Discover

Located on the south-west coast of Ireland, the famous Waterville Links golf course is one of Ireland’s top golf destinations. The golf course is over 125 years old and is currently rated as 2nd Best Golf Course in Ireland by the Golf Channel, and 3rd best by Golf World UK. The traditional seaside links golf course, designed originally by Eddie Hackett, is wedged between an estuary and Ballinskelligs Bay in County Kerry, south-west Ireland. The links golf course bears a resemblance to nearby links courses including Ballybunion’s Old Course and Tralee Golf Club. The Waterville House accompanies the famous Waterville Golf Links: an onsite Irish Manor House set on the Wild Atlantic Way. The onsite accommodation provides visiting golfers a chance to experience Irish hospitality on the doorstep of one of Ireland’s top golf courses. If driving from Cork, be sure to stop at Old Head and Dooks Golf Club before playing Waterville Links.

Golf Course Information

The combination of par three’s, par four’s and par five’s at Waterville Links is one of Ireland’s best 18-hole routes. Each hole on the golf course is individually named, giving golfers context and a steadfast memory of their last experience when returning to The Links, which most golfers do at Waterville. The holes are framed by hilly tussocks that are endemic of Ireland. At the same time, the fairways and greens are moulded by naturally undulating terrain that creates pockets of shadow in the morning and evening. The golf course’s position facing Ballinskellig’s Bay and an estuary means it is surrounded by water on three sides. Howling winds frequently challenge golfers at Waterville; golfers can expect a true taste of traditional Irish golf.

Different terrain levels distinguish the two nines at Waterville Links: the front nine is relatively flat while the back nine meanders through tall dunes reminiscent of Ballybunion and Trump International Links. The finishing three holes face the Atlantic Ocean and feature a par-4, par-3 and par-5 in that order. The distinct golf holes create an epic climax for any golf holes, and if the wind is up (which it usually is), the challenge is immense. There are few golfers who play Waterville Links and do not appreciate its beauty, challenge and significance to Irish golf. The original designer, Eddie Hackett, is an Irish native and was the ideal person for the job, although Tom Fazio has been involved in updating the golf course.

Practice Facilities

Golf practise facilities at Waterville Golf Links consist of an area designed by Tom Fazio as he was updating the championship golf course. Golfers can tee-off at the driving range or practise your short game at the chipping area with practice bunker. A large putting green is also available and near the Clubhouse.

Clubhouse

The Clubhouse at Waterville links underwent a complete refurbishment that was completed in 2019. The new and improved facilities enhanced the dining and bar area, locker rooms and golf shop. The Clubhouse dining area and restaurant include indoor and outdoor seating, as well as a bar with superb views over the surrounding countryside. The cuisine offered at the restaurant features fresh seafood and Irish food, with golf art and memorabilia decorating the Clubhouse. The golf shop features the best golf brands and all the essentials for your round at Waterville. The staff are knowledgeable and on-hand to assist every moment of your visit.

The Manor House

The Waterville House at The Links is an 18th-century Georgian manor house that faces the Wild Atlantic Way, overlooking the beautiful Ballinskelligs Bay and nearby Lough Currane to the east. Golfers looking to enjoy the authentic Waterville-experience must stay in the 12-bedroom, four-star residence. Amenities include en-suites, a sauna, steam room, health facility with massage and billiard room. Guests at Waterville House also enjoy preferred tee-times at The Links, so a multi-day stay with multiple rounds provides the best value in County Kerry. The nearby village has plenty to experience with restaurants, pubs and local events year-round. If fishing is a hobby, guests at Waterville enjoy access to private rivers and lakes surrounding Waterville House.
