Galway Bay Golf Resort is one of Ireland’s finest seaside championship courses situated on the Irish West Coast. Set on 300 acres and designed by former Ryder Cup and World Cup legend Christy O’Connor Jnr, the course offers golfers an honest look at traditional seaside links golf, with a few modern water features scattered around the golf course. A warm welcome and attentive service throughout will ensure your golf experience is first class. Galway Bay is best suited as part of a short-stay itinerary where other West Coast courses are included such as Connemara Championship Links, Lahinch and Doongbeg.
The Championship course at Galway Bay Golf Resort offers an eclectic lend of natural beauty and golfing adventure. When designing the course, Christy O’Connor sought to incorporate the backdrop of Galway Bay and the rugged curves of the Atlantic coastline with mature trees, water hazards, concealed bunkers and highly acclaimed putting surfaces. With variable wind speeds and directions, the Galway Bay golf course plays differently each day and poses a considerable challenge to even the lowest handicappers, yet it is a true and fair test of golfing abilities across the range due to there being five sets of tees.
Surrounding the course are the hills of Clare to the South, while to the West sits the majestic city of Galway, which hugs the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. The course itself has been described with ‘parkland by the sea’ in mind and has strong American design influences. History is interlaced with golf on the course, some prime examples include stone huts, an ancient ring fort and a 16th century copper mine. Overall it is a long course, especially if playing from the back tees, but its lack of undulations that are found on most other Irish sea-side courses mean that Galway Bay is playable by golfers of all abilities and even offers a respite from the challenging links courses in the area.
Clubhouse
The clubhouse at Galway Bay Golf Resort has undergone a refurbishment in 2015 that offers 11,000 square feet of space, featuring a bar, lounge, restaurant and function room which can be booked for up to 200 guests, al with panoramic views of Galway Bay. A fully-stocked golf shop is located in the Clubhouse that features all the biggest brands, as well as Galway Bay-logoed trinkets.
Practice Facilities
Practice facilities consist of a driving range, short-game chipping area and putting green. The bar and restaurant at Galway Bay Golf Resort is open 7-days a week and offers breakfast, lunch and dinner. The cuisine offers golfers everything from snacks to intimate meals with an extensive wine list to complement the broad selection of Irish fare. Local produce is sourced to create a menu that combines the best flavours from the West of Ireland to your plate.
