Located in the north-west of Ireland, County Sligo Golf Club has been attracting visitors since its conception in 1894. The Golf Club is situated along Ireland’s famous Wild Atlantic Way, bordering the Atlantic Ocean on a narrow peninsula called Rosses Point. The Golf Club has three courses, but its best course is the Harry Colt-designed Championship Links. Colt redesigned the original links course in 1927, but recently Pat Ruddy has been commissioned to make some modern improvements to the 18-hole course. Nearby golf destinations include the award-winning Enniscrone Links and Lough Erne Resort. Golfers travelling the Wild Atlantic Way are encouraged to stop at the County Sligo Golf Club for a round on the Colt Championship Links golf course after visiting Castle Dargan, Donegal Golf Club and Enniscrone Golf Club.
The Championship Course at County Sligo Golf Club was laid out by George Combe in 1894, redesigned by Harry Colt in 1927, and recently refurbished by Pat Ruddy. The course is a traditional seaside links courses characteristic of Irish golf courses. It bears a resemblance to the Galway Golf Resort and the Eden Course at St Andrews Links. The Championship Course is devoid of trees and prone to fierce winds from the wild Atlantic Ocean. The course is accessible by golfers of every calibre, offering a challenge for low-handicappers off the back tees and shorter distances for weekend golfers.
Expect to find fantastic views, including the iconic Benbulbin ‘Table’ mountain to the east, and ocean views to the west. Island tee-boxes are carved from fescue grass, while fairways meander over gently undulating terrain. The natural links-like feel of County Sligo Golf Club is spectacular, with ditches, fescue-lined fairways and raised greens supplemented with run-off bunkers throughout the course. To say that Harry Colt’s legacy has been preserved is a testament to Pat Ruddy’s skill as a links golf architect, and evident by the high level of praise from repeat golfers to Rosses Point.
Practice Facilities
Golfers can make the most of the County Sligo Golf Club practice facilities with a full-length driving range, nine-hole putting green, nine-hole chipping practice area, short-game practice area and a practice bunker. The facilities are immense and provide golfers and members the ideal place to warm up or practise their swing before or after their round.
Clubhouse
The County Sligo Golf Clubhouse features two bars and The Watchhouse Restaurant with commanding views over the first and second holes, with the iconic Benbulbin mountain in the distance. Other facilities in the Clubhouse include a well-stocked golf shop, changing rooms and plenty of memorabilia over the course’s 125-year history.
