Carne Golf Links

County Mayo, Ireland

About

Location

Discover

Situated on an isolated peninsula in Western Ireland, Carne Golf Links offers 27 holes of golf along The Wild Atlantic Way. The golf complex is located in County Mayo, a picturesque region, known for its scenic coastline and rolling hills. The golf course at Carne Golf Links (a.k.a Belmullet) was designed by the famous Irish course architect Eddie Hackett; it was also the last golf course he designed before he passed; it opened in 1993. Carne Golf Links is situated on the Mullet Peninsula, near the small town of Belmullet, directly west of the Castle Dargan Golf Resort.

We recommend renting a vehicle and driving along The Wild Atlantic Way, stopping at Donegal Golf Club, County Sligo Golf Club, and Enniscrone Golf Club before heading to Carne Golf Links and Galway Bay Resort further south. Carne Golf Links is rated in the Top 10 Irish Golf Courses and Top 50 in Britain and Ireland. The original 18-hole golf course is accompanied by a 9-hole course which opened in 2019, and was designed by Jim Engh Design and McIntosh Golf Design.

Golf Course Information

The original golf course at Carne Golf Links measures 6,706-yards and 6,132-metres, but the nines can be altered to form different 18-hole tracks. The Kilmore Nine (opened 2013), can be combined with the original back-nine of Hackett’s design. The result is one of the longest links golf courses in the world. All 27-holes at Carne Golf Links occur naturally, with very little earth moved to sculpt the golf course. The setting, on Ireland’s west coast and with ocean framing one side and wild dunes undulating throughout the complex is reminiscent of Ballybunion’s Old Course. Visiting golfers will marvel at the modest price and uncrowded tee sheet at Carne Golf Links; it is a testament to its isolated location and modest history, but it offers world-class value for money and is one of the funniest rounds of golf you will experience in the Emerald Isle.

The golf course is on the eastern side of the Mullet Peninsula, overlooking Blacksod Bay. The Irish Times readership voted the region as the ‘Best Place to go Wild in Ireland,’ and we cannot disagree with the locals. The links golf course was awarded ‘Best Hidden Gem in Connacht” but The Golfers Guide to Ireland. When visiting the golf course, beware the ferocious winds from The Atlantic Ocean. The Carne Links golf course is a true Irish Links Course. Designed by an Irish native and situated within a nationally-voted region of outstanding natural beauty, Carne Golf Links must be considered for your next Wild Atlantic Golf trip. We recommend playing all 27-holes at the Carne Golf Links during your visit: the Kilmore nine is one of Europe’s best 9-hole golf courses.

Venue Information

Practice Facilities

Carne Golf Links, despite being a relatively new golf complex, was not created with expansive practice facilities. That I why we recommend playing the Kilmore nine before heading to the Hackett-designed 18-hole course. There is a driving net to practise your swing, as well as a practice putting green accompanied by a bunker.

Clubhouse

The Clubhouse at Carne Golf Links is fantastic. It is a modest links golf clubhouse without all the fanfare of major golf destinations. Inside you will find a well-stocked golf shop with the latest brands and necessities for your round, as well as some Carne-branded merchandise to take home. The top floor has a restaurant and bar with fantastic views over the links golf complex; why not stop by the clubhouse after your round and enjoy a post-round meal and pint of Guinness.
