Situated on Ireland’s North coast in County Donegal, Ballyliffin Golf Club offers two 18-hole golf courses of championship quality. The Glashedy Links and Old Courses provide 36-holes of golf in what is Ireland’s northernmost golf club. The Glashedy Links golf course has hosted various tournaments including The 2019 Dubai Duty-Free Irish Open, 2016 Close Championship and the European Tour North West of Ireland Open in 2002. Nearby golf courses include Castlerock, Portsalon and Rosapenna Hotel & Resort with its Sandy Hills Links and Old Tom Morris Links. Ballyliffin marks one end of Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way; we recommend renting a vehicle and driving the country’s west coast, playing some of the best links golf courses in Europe.

Golf Course Information

The Glashedy Links golf course at Ballyliffin Golf Club occupies an expansive area next to the Atlantic Ocean. It opened in 1995 and is considered a very new course in terms of Irish links golf. The name ‘Glashedy’ is pronounced ‘Glasheedy’, and is named after Glashedy Rock, Ireland’s equivalent to Turnberry’s Ailsa Craig. The course is situated on prime links land on a 400-acre complex, adjacent to the Atlantic Ocean in what is known as Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way. Some holes on Glashedy Links are interwoven with The Old Course layout, providing a sprawling mass of golf holes on the North Donegal coast. Rolling dunes equivalent to County Kerry’s Ballybunion and fairways reminiscent of Scotland’s Royal Dornoch are some of the Glashedy Course’s strengths.

The golf course is noticeably void of any trees and this leaves it exposed to frequent gales from the Atlantic; the links is best played with low-flying shots and bump-and-run approaches around the greens. A round at Glashedy Links makes any visit to Donegal worthwhile. The golf course is known for its pot bunkers and challenging par-fours. When visiting Ballyliffen Golf Club, expect to find panoramic views of Donegal countryside, with a long coastline and distant mountains adding to the Ballyliffin reverie.

Practice Facilities

The golf practice facilities at Ballyliffin Golf Club are fantastic, with a full-length driving range, short-game area for pitching and chipping, accompanied by a practice bunker and putting green. Use of the driving range costs €4 for a basket of golf balls. Other facilities include an excellent nine-hole course named ‘The Pollan Links’ which provides visiting golfers a fun post-round challenge or pre-round warm-up.

Clubhouse

The Ballyliffin Golf Clubhouse features a 25,000 square foot building that serves as the bastion of the Golf Club, overlooking the magnificent golf complex. On the top floor, the Links Restaurants and Bar serves a wide array of beverages and world-class cuisine year-round. On the ground floor, golfers will find the Pro Shop with a well-stocked range of golf apparel and equipment, including Ballyliffin-branded merchandise. Lockers and changing facilities with showers are also available in the clubhouse for visiting golfers.
