Residing less than 20-minutes from Oahu’s Waikiki, the Royal Hawaiian Golf Club brings to mind feelings of Jurassic Park. Overgrown foliage, towering mountains and just enough ground cleared for a golf course will leave jaws dropped and cameras flashing; this is a highlight golf course for the Hawaiian Islands. The Clubhouse features a fantastic restaurant serving breakfast and lunch, and a Pro Shop with plenty of spare golf balls for your round. The Royal Hawaiian Golf Club is not one to be missed when visiting the Hawaiian Islands. The Royal Hawaii Golf Club is best experienced with an inter-island travel package, played along with Mauna Kea, Manele Bay, Wailea Beach Resort and the Westin Hapuna Beach Resort.
The Royal Hawaiian Golf Club course was originally designed by Pete Dye and his son Perry Dye, but originally opened in 1993. It was recently redesigned by golfing shark Greg Norman, and the course has never looked better under the eye of three famed golf architects. The golf club is nestled in the Maunawili Valley under the eaves or razorlike mountains, and under the ferns of prehistoric tropical vegetation. Royal palms, Koa trees and banana trees, combines with flowing streams full of native Hawaiian fish are sure to excite the nature lovers when playing a round.
The signature hole is the second, which features a par-3, 187-yard carry to a peninsula green over a large pond. The backdrop of the mountains as you hit will most likely cause your ball to digress and be lost forever, but it will be worth it for the view. Every club in your bag will be required, and every spare ball in your playing partner’s bag will be utilised because it is a tough course; wayward shots will never be seen again, and there will be mulligans on many holes. It will be worth the challenge, however, as the Royal Hawaiian Golf Club will instil lifelong memories and that is the fun that golf is about.
The O’lena restaurant is located in the expansive clubhouse that is adjacent to the first tee. Open for breakfast and lunch every day, golfers can enjoy a wide range of breakfast options and traditional lunch cuisines ranging from salads to sandwiches, burgers, fine meats, local beers and an extensive wine list.
Practice facilities at The Royal Hawaiian Golf Club consist of a short game range rather than a full-length. This is because of the impeaching tropical vegetation that always threatens to overrun the complex! Golfers can warm-up and hone your skills on the practice putting green, pitch and chip range and the practice sand bunker.
