Designed in 1964 by golf legend architect Robert Trent Jones Senior, the Mauna Kea championship 18-hole course has caught the eyes of golfing greats for the last half-century. Recent improvements have been made by Rees Jones (the youngest son of Trent Jones Snr). The iconic par-3 third hole features a daunting hit over the Pacific Ocean to a peninsula green and dramatic to say the least. Mauna Kea is a jewel in the crown of Hawaii’s golf scene. The Mauna Kea golf course features on our Luxury Hawaiian Islands Golf Tour. We played the golf course along with other famous Hawaiian destinations including Wailea Beach Resort, Manele Bay and Royal Hawaiian Golf Club. The Mauna Kea golf course is one Hawaii’s best, blending oceanside golf with tropical charm.

Golf Course Information

Laid out on centuries-old lava rock outcrops and the rugged coastline of the Kohala Coast, Mauna Kea’s legendary status as a golf course of world renown is due to lush fairways that contrast with black rocks and azure waters of the Pacific Ocean. In typical Trent Jones fashion, the greens are undulating and the greenside bunkers perilous. A golf holiday that includes Mauna Kea is time well spent, year-round. There are about 100 bunkers on the course, with the  majority of them surrounding elevated, undulating greens, so rest assured of the challenge that awaits at the notorious Mauna Kea golf course on Hawaii’s Big Island.

Recent changes to the course were made by Rees Jones, the youngest son of Robert Trent Jones Snr. State-of-the-art irrigation, bunker liners and advanced drainage techniques keeps the course looking world-class year-round despite the tropical rain and humidity. The greens were fitted with high-efficiency ultra-dwarf Tifeagle Bermuda Grass, whilst the fairways were clad with Tifway 419 hybrid Bermuda grass, from the tees to the rough. Mauna Kea is a world-class golf venue in an isolated area in the Pacific Ocean; a course that is a destination unto itself and a bucket-list spot for the avid travelling golfer.

Venue Information

World-class practice facilities t Mauna Kea consist of a 400-yard driving range with complimentary range balls if you have a tee-time for that day. A practice putting green adjacent to the clubhouse will get your putter swinging efficiently before your round.

The golf course beverage cart features a diverse menu of blended cocktails, beers and snacks, whilst the clubhouse restaurant, named ‘ Number 3,’ offers casual island cuisine in a relaxed atmosphere. It serves lunch daily from 11.30 to 2.30 with a  wide range of soups, salads, sandwiches, burgers, fish and rice-based dishes.
