Just inland from the great lake and interspersed by four meandering streams, the grassland-and-dunes aspect of the Irish course is a deceivingly tranquil landscape. Both traditional and memorable, the Irish course is full of unique challenges. We recommend staying at Kohler Resort, and including The Straits golf course in a package with Blackwolf Run’s Meadow Valleys and The River course.

The course has everything you want from lush grass, a generous amount of water & trees to make the course challenging, but also well-places bunkers to keep you on your toes. It opened in 2000, and Pete Dye did a splendid second job at Whistling Straits with The Irish Golf Course. The course is much cheaper to play than The Straits, but that’s not due to its layout, just to the Straits’ fame as the host to major tournaments. The layout of The Irish appeals to a much wider demographic than The Straits because it’s less punishing.
It’s also more protected from the winds blowing directly from Lake Michigan, and it features bentgrass fairways & greens, providing a softer playing surface where your stray shots won’t always run into knee-deep tussocks. The signature hole is the 18th a 510-metre par-5 where the green is out of sight from the tee, and the approach to the tee reveals right-side shots having a blind approach shot and left-hand shots, if they make it over the water, will have a better view of the green.
