The King Robert The Bruce Course at Turnberry is situated on a rocky peninsula that defines the game of golf. Within the greater Trump Resort complex, one of the world’s most internationally recognised courses lies in magnificent style. With the looming Ailsa Craig on the horizon, the iconic lighthouse serves as an eternal sentinel among the ruins of Turnberry Castle, said to be the birthplace of one King Robert the Bruce. The course is considered second-best compared to The Ailsa Course, but it still provides a riveting round and is well worth playing during a visit at Turnberry Resort. The golf complex is situated on Scotland’s south-western Ayrshire coast, not far from Royal Troon, Western Gailes and Dundonald Links, which are must-stop destinations for any golf holiday. Various images supplied by Gary Lisbon.
Many people are unaware of the fact that the iconic lighthouse, which was built by the family of celebrated author, Robert Louis Stevenson, is situated amongst the ruins of Turnberry Castle. It was in this medieval castle that King Robert the Bruce was born in July 1274. Turnberry is steeped in a strong history, leading us to name our new golf course after the King of Scotland, Robert the Bruce, the historical warrior who led Scotland to claim its right as an independent country in the Battle of Bannockburn in June 1314. Martin Ebert, who was the architect responsible for the reborn Ailsa, was commissioned once more to create what will be a world class golf experience which will thrill golfers of all abilities. Breathtaking vistas from the 8th, 9th, 10th and 11th of King Robert the Bruce delight golfers, with spectacular views of Turnberry’s stunning coastline, castle ruins and the lighthouse.
The overall design concept for the course has been to introduce fairway bunkers with sand faces and marram grass “eyebrow” faces tempting “risk or reward” shots whilst greenside bunkers are shaped and neatly reverted to require perfect recovery shots. With 18 holes of magnificent golf, the introduction of King Robert the Bruce reinforces Trump Turnberry’s reputation as a true golfer’s paradise.
Enhance your golf skills at The Golf Academy at Trump Turnberry, inclusive of a putting facility, teaching bay full of top-of-the-line golf technology, and a True Spec fitting studio. In June 2015, The Turnberry Clubhouse was reopened following an extensive refurbishment creating an unrivalled destination for golfers and visitors. Home to one of the largest Pro Shop’s in Europe, this richly decorated, well-appointed clubhouse also features a replica claret jug, which is on display along with a collection of memorabilia which reflects the resort’s rich Open history. Why not visit Turnberry’s 19th hole, the “The Duel in the Sun” restaurant, named in honour of the legendary play-off between Tom Watson and Jack Nicklaus in the 1977 Open Championship.
The Duel in the Sun restaurant commands exceptional views over the golf course and features a steak and lobster theme to its extensive menu. While a number of food favourites for golfers remain, including fish and chips, there is also a Josper Grill menu which uses a unique a Spanish cooking style adding a delicious charcoal flavour to meat or fish. The unrivalled golfing history of the resort is also acknowledged in two meeting rooms, the Champions Suite and the Tom Watson Boardroom, both of which feature iconic images of the illustrious winners of many major tournaments at Trump Turnberry over the years.
The pro shop, one of the largest of its kind in Europe, the shop is an impressive 3,600 square feet and stocks the latest in golfing apparel. If you are looking for a memento or a souvenir of your time at Trump Turnberry, or need some additional golf wear, then head to the professional shop and choose from branded merchandise from names such as Polo Ralph Lauren, Galvin Green and more.
