Home of the Waste Management Phoenix Open, The Players Course, ‘The Stadium Course’ at Scottsdale is a bucket-list destination. Designed by the team of Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish, the TPC Scottsdale golf course opened in 1986, and has since become one of the most recognised golf courses in the world. Maintained to PGA tour quality year-round, the TPC Scottsdale Stadium Course is much more open compared to other TPC courses around America. Sculpted from the Sonoran Desert, the TPC Stadium Course in Scottsdale offers a fun challenge to amateurs who can experience it 51 weeks of the year when the Waste Management Pro Am is not running. Expect to see desert wastelands beside holes and along fairways, with cacti and native shrubs throughout. One of the biggest challenges to golfers lies in the 72 bunkers that are cunningly placed around the course and in particular the greens. The sand within the bunkers is light and fluffy and aren’t too hard to get out of unless your ball is embedded, but the angles of bunkers to greens will punish you if you cannot control where the ball stops.
TPC Scottsdale Stadium Course’s greens appear flat but have subtle undulations that have the potential to frustrate everybody. It is best to approach them with a bump and run from off the green than attempt a long carry from the middle of the fairway. Overall the course is a must-play experience if visiting the Scottsdale area simply because you will know that you’re walking in the footsteps of golf’s greatest.
