Designed by famed golf architect Mike Strantz, the Tobacco Road Golf Course is widely considered within the USA’s Top 100 golf courses. Strantz himself who passed away in 2005 was named in the year 2000 as one of the “Top 10 Greatest Golf Architects of All Time” by Golfweek Magazine. Located in the Sandhills of North Carolina, just 30-minutes’ drive from Pinehurst Resort, the Tobacco Road Golf Club was established in 1998 and its design elements feature bold contrasts of course to landscape. A true test of golfer’s playing abilities, the Tobacco Road Golf Course is a must-play destination on your next golf vacation. The course is also ranked number 50 in the World by Golf Course Architecture Magazine.
Shaped from an old sand quarry once cultivated by Tobacco farmers and where the Golf Club draws its name, the course favours risk/reward opportunities that makes for an exciting test of your nerve. A bit like a rollercoaster, Strantz designed Tobacco Road to be challenging but ultimately thoroughly enjoyable throughout the 18-hole route. The holes are shaped with elevation changes, wastelands of sand, high-ridged bunkers and boulders, rough-covered dunes, tiered-greens and blind tee shots. The challenges presented by the course change with each hole and remain a testament to Strantz’s design capabilities.
Many fairways feature narrow gullies and valleys that sluice through grassy ridges lined by bunkers and manoeuvred only with precision shot-making. Accuracy is demanded at Tobacco Road Golf Club in North Carolina; fairways often bottleneck between sand dunes and gullies to elevated greens or wastelands that must be carried. The course is maintained to the highest order and is playable year-round. It is not an overly long golf course, but it is shaped so that you will need every club in your bag. Overall, Tobacco Road is a truly exhilarating golf course that will make you crave for more. Keep in mind the 6th hole, a par 3 where you must carry a wide wasteland with hilly knolls to a wide elevated green protected by bunkers in front and behind.
Practice Facilities
The fantastic practice facilities at Tobacco Road Golf Club consist of a full-length driving range, short-game chipping area and putting green. During winter months, you may be required to use the artificial mats at the driving range.
Clubhouse
A very traditional building, the Clubhouse at Tobacco Road is rustic and welcoming at all times during the year. An open floor plan houses the golf shop and snack bar with large open fireplace in the middle, supported by comfortable sofas to enjoy your snacks. Two stone porches offer views of the first and tenth tees, and the rocking chairs located on the back porch are in a prime position to watch the eighteenth green.
