The Grange Golf Club represents one of Australian golf’s great transformation stories: a world class 36 hole facility built on land once deemed unsuitable even for agriculture. Located in Grange, South Australia, just 14 kilometers northwest of Adelaide’s city center and minutes from Adelaide Airport, The Grange occupies reclaimed sandy swampland that was once home to snakes and mosquitoes. Golf was first played on this land in 1910 when the McCoy family, who owned the “Pinery” estate, laid out a rudimentary course using jam tins as holes. The Grange Golf Club was officially founded in 1926, the last of Adelaide’s “big four” championship clubs to emerge during the golden era of golf development in the city’s western suburbs. The others include Royal Adelaide, Glenelg and Kooyonga.
The original course, designed by H.L. “Cargie” Rymill, opened in 1927, but the club’s defining moment came in 1967 when architect Vern Morcom designed the East Course as a companion layout to the recently redesigned original course, which became known as the West. The East Course achieved legendary status on its own when a 21 year old trainee professional named Greg Norman won the 1976 West Lakes Classic: his first professional tournament victory and the launching pad for one of golf’s greatest careers. Two years later, another future major champion, Wayne Grady, also claimed his maiden professional win on the East Course. Since those historic moments, The Grange has hosted numerous prestigious championships including the 2008 World Amateur Teams Championships (Eisenhower Trophy and Espirito Santo Trophy), multiple Australian Amateur Championships, and the highly successful 2016 and 2019 ISPS Handa Women’s Australian Opens. Most notably, The Grange has been the proud home of LIV Golf Adelaide since 2023, with the event winning the World Golf Awards’ Best Golf Event globally in both 2023 and 2024.
Both courses underwent complete redesigns in recent years that have elevated The Grange to world class status. Michael Clayton reconstructed the West Course with a $1.6 million redevelopment that created a strategic masterpiece featuring wide corridors, towering pines, and sophisticated green complexes. In 2010, Greg Norman returned to redesign the East Course where his professional journey began: a $3 million reconstruction completed in 2012 that pays homage to Melbourne’s legendary sandbelt courses. Today, both layouts are ranked in Australia’s top 50, with the West Course ranked 35th and the East Course ranked 48th in Golf Australia Magazine’s 2024 rankings. The Grange continues to be recognized at the highest level of Australian golf, combining championship caliber golf with outstanding member and guest facilities.
THE WEST COURSE
The West Course at The Grange is a classic strategic golf design that rewards thoughtful play and punishes reckless aggression. Originally designed by Vern Morcom and opened in 1967, the course was completely reconstructed by Michael Clayton Golf Design in 2007, creating a par 71 layout measuring 6,186 meters (6,768 yards) that epitomizes modern strategic architecture. The course is laid out on excellent golfing terrain with wide, generous fairways punctuated by corridors of towering Callitris and Monterey pines, expansive native grass areas, and firm, fast running turf that promotes ground game options and creative shot making.
What defines the West Course is its exceptional green complexes and sophisticated bunkering strategy. Clayton designed greens with subtle internal contours and multiple pin positions that reward accurate iron play from the correct angles of approach. The fairway bunkering is organized not simply to catch wayward shots, but to penalize even slightly misplayed good shots, particularly those that take the wrong line off the tee. Players must think strategically about positioning, choosing which half of the fairway provides the best angle to attack specific pin placements. The undulating ground surrounding the greens presents stimulating options for short game recovery, with multiple ways to play bump and run shots, flop shots, or aggressive putts from the fringe.
Signature holes include the par 3 18th, a dramatic finishing hole where Mullet Creek guards the left side of the green, demanding precision under pressure. The course features an intangible quality that’s difficult to quantify: it simply feels like a wonderful place to play golf, with mature vegetation creating natural definition, strategic variety that keeps players engaged from tee to green, and conditioning maintained to championship standards year round. The West Course ranked 35th in Golf Australia Magazine’s 2024 Top 100, cementing its status as one of South Australia’s finest championship tests.
THE EAST COURSE
The East Course holds a sacred place in Australian golf history as the birthplace of Greg Norman’s professional career, and fittingly, The Great White Shark returned in 2010 to completely redesign the layout where his journey began. Greg Norman Golf Course Design collaborated with The Grange green committee on an extensive study of Melbourne’s renowned sandbelt courses before embarking on the $3 million reconstruction completed in 2012. The result is a par 72 championship layout measuring 6,485 meters (7,095 yards) that captures the strategic brilliance and aesthetic beauty of Australia’s finest sand based courses.
The East Course is routed over land that transitions from slightly flatter terrain on the front nine into some of the property’s best natural golfing ground on the back nine. The course plays through corridors of remnant native vegetation featuring over 100 native plant species including Callitris pines, golden wattles, boobialla, and hop bush: one of only a handful of locations in the Adelaide region where pre European settlement vegetation can be found. This authentic Australian bushland creates both strategic challenge and environmental significance, with the club’s pioneering Wetland and Aquifer Storage and Recovery Scheme providing water security while delivering environmental benefits to the broader community.
Norman’s design emphasizes strategic options for players of all skill levels, with multiple playing lines on most holes that reward well placed tee shots with superior approach angles. The course features firm, fast fairways, bunkers demanding thoughtful approach shots, and water hazards adding extra dimension to key holes. Signature challenges include the par 4 4th hole and the demanding par 3 7th, both testing accuracy and course management skills. The bunkering throughout reflects Norman’s trademark bold style, with deep sand hazards positioned to catch both poor shots and slightly wayward good attempts. The green complexes encourage precise iron play and demand creativity around the putting surfaces, with multiple recovery options available for those who miss in the right spots.
The East Course consistently earns recognition as one of Australia’s finest modern championship layouts, ranked 48th in Golf Australia Magazine’s 2024 Top 100. It challenges and rewards players of all abilities while maintaining the authentic character and strategic depth that made Greg Norman fall in love with the game at this very venue nearly five decades ago.
The Grange Golf Club provides world class facilities that extend far beyond its two championship golf courses, establishing it as one of South Australia’s premier sporting and hospitality destinations. The modern clubhouse serves as the heart of the club, featuring newly renovated locker rooms, multiple dining venues, and an award winning function center that has hosted countless weddings, corporate events, and celebrations with spectacular views overlooking the golf courses.
Dining options at The Grange cater to every occasion. The Grange Bistro operates Tuesday through Sunday from 11:00am to 3:00pm, offering a diverse menu ranging from casual pre round bruschetta and burgers to long lunch favorites like fish and chips or premium steaks, all prepared with the best local South Australian produce. For more refined evening dining, Grilled @ Grange (formerly The Grange Restaurant) opens Friday and Saturday evenings, serving contemporary Australian cuisine in elegant surrounds with indoor seating or alfresco dining on the balcony overlooking the manicured fairways. The clubhouse also features multiple bars and comfortable lounges where members and guests can relax after their rounds.
The multi award winning function center offers flexible event spaces that can accommodate intimate gatherings or large celebrations, with a private balcony providing spectacular panoramic views of the golf course. The venue is renowned for hosting exceptional weddings, corporate conferences, golf days, and special occasions, supported by professional event coordination and premium catering services.
The Grange made golf history by becoming the first private members golf club in Australia to add a five star gymnasium to its facilities. Gym Grange features state of the art European equipment, spectacular views overlooking the 1st tee of the West Course, and is supervised by qualified personal trainers. The gym is open to both golf club members (who receive a 20% discount) and the general public seven days per week. In conjunction with the gym, The Grange launched Musculoskeletal at Grange: a multi disciplinary clinic offering physiotherapy, chiropractic services, massage therapy, and acupuncture.
Practice facilities at The Grange are comprehensive and maintained to championship standards, including a full driving range, dedicated short game practice areas with bunkers, and multiple putting greens. The professional shop is recognized as the only private club shop in Australia offering specialized fitting systems that provide complete data to ensure every golfer gets equipment perfectly suited to their game. The shop stocks premium equipment and apparel, with PGA professionals available for lessons, club fitting, and expert advice. Over 30 motorized golf carts are available for hire, along with full sets of hire clubs and pull carts for those who prefer to walk.
