A golfing Mecca to the most accomplished golfer or the enthusiastic amateur, a trip to St Andrews Links is one which realises the ultimate dream for golfers worldwide. From the iconic Swilcan bridge on The Old Course to Tom Morris’ masterful architecture on the New Course, St Andrews Links has developed over 600 years to become one of the most famous locations in golf. Central to their history and still true to this day is the fact that all seven courses at St Andrews Links are public and Open to everyone. Nearby golf courses include Dumbarnie, The Duke’s and Kingsbarns. Various images courtesy of St Andrews Links Trust and Gary Lisbon.
The oldest ‘new’ course in the world, the second course at The Home of Golf was built by the ‘Keeper of the Greens’ (Tom Morris) in 1895 and was imaginatively named to differentiate from its famous neighbour. At Par 71 and 6,625 yards, with 18 holes, the New Course at St Andrews is often referred to as the world-famous links’ best-kept secret. It’s an undulating course similar in character to the Old Course, with driving range facilities in the nearby St Andrews Links Golf Academy. Boasting undulating fairways and challenging greens, The New Course is a classic test of Links golf and offers a first-class experience in its own right. The New Course plays like Carnoustie or Panmure wich many undulations and pot bunkers.
Were it not for the proximity of its more illustrious and ancient neighbour; many experts feel that the Open Championships – as well as many other major golfing events – would have been fought out here, the world’s oldest and most challenging ‘new’ course. It may be relatively new, but it has an extraordinary reputation for excellence. The layout was based on the traditional out and back routing; among its most famous features are the shared fairways and a double green at the 3rd and 15th. Low light at sunrise and sunset reveal the course’s countless fiendish folds, wrinkles, and rolls. Add plenty of gorse and it’s one of the trickiest courses around.
