Founded in 1906, the Southport & Ainsdale Golf Club resides on England’s Golf Coast, just 30 minutes from Liverpool by car. The Championship Golf Course is close to Formby Hall Golf Resort, Royal Birkdale and Royal Lytham & St Annes. Most golfers tend to visit the ‘Royal’golf courses of England’s Golf Coast in Lancashire, but the former Ryder Cup host “S&A” is one you should definitely consider visiting. Designed by George Lowe in 1907, the course was altered in 1922 by the great James Braid who completed his works in 1924. The Club has hosted two Ryder Cup matches, second only to The Belfry, in 1933 and 1937, and a number of other championships including the British Ladies’ Open and the British Amateur. Southport & Ainsdale is a qualifying course for The Open Championship and comes as a highly-acclaimed test of links golf.
Designed by George Lowe, but redesigned entirely by James Braid, the bulk of Southport & Ainsdale Golf Course is attributable to Mr Braid, whose links rejuvenation is biblical. The golf course is set on rolling terrain near the Irish Sea. Its challenges come in the form of prevailing strong winds typical of links golf courses, compounded with undulating greens, numerous pot bunkers and long heather-like rough.
The golf course has undergone various minor developments over the years to keep its status as one of the best Golf Coast courses. These works have mainly involved the removal of bunkers, alteration of tees and general aesthetic improvements. Watch out for the Gumblies Hole (16), which plays into the wind and your tee shot must make it over a major bunker & raised ridge upheld by railway sleepers. Overall, the Southport & Ainsdale Golf Course must be played from a historical perspective, however, the challenge it presents, along with aesthetically pleasing scenery, makes it a truly memorable golfing experience.
Clubhouse
The Southport & Ainsdale Clubhouse is the centrepiece of the complex. The fully air-conditioned dining room features superb golf course views. Members and visitors can relax in the comfort of the main lounge area which is split into the lounge, the Ryder Cup Room and the Casual Bar. Visitors are welcome in all areas of the clubhouse. Inside, you will find fantastic locker and bathroom facilities, as well as a restaurant and bar. For those who enjoy snooker, there is a billiards/snooker room with two tables.
Practice Facilities
For a lot of golf clubs in the United Kingdom, practice facilities are not present. At Southport & Ainsdale, the practice facilities are superb. Featuring a driving range, putting green and short-game area, you must arrive early to get a good warm up before your round.
